I'll try give as much info as possible...

iPhone 4S, jailbroken (so i'm aware i can't erase the phone or update OTA).

There is about 10GB free space on the 16GB phone. I tried to update through iTunes & i got error messages saying there wasn't enough space to do this.

I had a look & it said there was 0bytes free, which i knew was nonsense. Unplugged, re-plugged & iTunes said there was 10GB free.

I kept trying & it kept failing, more & more various error messages.

I believe the phone may be in DFU mode now? A picture of the charger cable with an arrow pointing upwards to a blue iTunes symbol - it wont exit this mode & i've tried updating in this mode too & it still fails.

Is there any way i can force the update?
