I have a mac mini that I am trying to update. I have very slow internet so downloading the update takes forever and twice now after going through the process i get the message that there was an error and I can't update. I have no idea what the problem is but hate the thought of trying this again. Is there a way I can download the update on a usb drive at work and the install it on my mac from there?

If you're trying to update to 10.12.6, it's just been released and updates are slow just after the release because many people are updating. If you have a slow Internet, it's probably going to be worse.

You can try the combo update:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1931?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
You can download it and it will be run locally from your computer. But again, it's just been released so downloads may be slow for a few days.

This presumes you're already running Sierra. If you're running an earlier OS, you need to download the entire Sierra installer.

According to the app store I am updating to 10.12.5. I have downloaded it twice with no luck. It has taken about six or seven hours to download this file and I hate to go through it again. I have never had a problem updating before.

It's a waste of time to keep trying to get the 10.12.5 update, when you can use the 10.12.6 combo updater that is linked in treekam's post #2. That update will install on any version of 10.12 from .0 to .6
Also, much quicker to download less than 2GB, compared to more than 5GB for the full install.
