I looked up how to update my iMac its version is 10.5.8 and it said to go to software update but it says I'm up to date?

10.5.8 is the latest version of Leopard (10.5).

To upgrade the OS, you will need to purchase a disc containing Snow Leopard, OS X v10.6.

There isn't anyway to download it? Thanks btw. Also could I jump to the current version of do I have to buy every version up until now?

You can't download, only purchase it on a disc from Apple. Once you have bought 10.6, you can download other OS' such as 10.7 or 10.8.

Snow Leopard isn't available as a download from Apple.

Once you get to SL, you can go directly to Mountain Lion (v10.8), which is downloadable through the Mac App Store. One of (if not the) reason you need SL, is it is the first version to support the Mac App Store, which is needed in order to purchase Lion or Mountain Lion (10.7, 10.8, respectively).

Also, your iMac needs to meet the minimum system requirements for Lion or ML: A Core 2 Duo or later processor for Lion, and an iMac Mid-2007 or newer for Mountain Lion.
