My Mac Pro 5,1 has 10.14.3. From System Preferences Software Update I try to update to the current 10.14.5. On reboot the screen goes black and my mouse pointer is visible and moves with the mouse, but nothing happens. Any suggestions? The only modification is that I have Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX580 graphics card in place of the OEM card.

I have recently done this same update 10.14.3>10.14.5.
Install went as normal for me.

You could try the full installer from the app store, so your fw gets updated also.

what is your boot drive - HDD via SATA, SATA SSD via SATA, SATA SSD via PCIe, NVMe via PCIe?
what format is your boot drive?
any RAID involved?

In my experience. If you use a NVMe you should clone (via Carbon Copy Cloner) your system from NVMe to one internal SSD or HDD. You should Start from cloned system. Then you download the fullinstaller 10.14.5 from Apple. Follow the instructions in order to upgrade the Boot ROM if necessary. After Boot ROM has been upgraded to 144.0.0.0 you could update to 10.4.5 in NVMe.

I assume your GPU is flashed in order to be able to choose your starting disk
