On my 2.66 GHz iMac, I can't get it to accept input from the mic that's part of my headphones. I have gone to Sound in the System Preferences and changed from the Internal Microphone to the Line In selection (see pic) but I get nothing. What am I doing wrong? (I know it's something  )

    Thanks in advance.

The port is not a Mic port, it's a line in port. The mic will not work without a preamp.

Thanks for the reply. Then why is there an input socket marked with a microphone symbol next to the headphone output socket? Or is that just a little joke Apple has played on everyone. Let us think it will work, but noooooo. :p

Not sure. I don't know what yours looks like, but mine is definitely not a microphone symbol. Mine is a circle with two triangles pointing toward the center of the circle.

 After I stood on my head to really look at it, I see you are right. Even worse, the microphone symbol was on the plug leading from my headphones, not on the iMac. Me bad, baaadddd, boy.
