Especially since in the keynote Jobs specifically mentioned that it wasn't necessary.

that was weird. and I guess one way an iPad does not replace a computer.

being that you need one to setup iPad to use

That is really lame. Confirms what I said at launch. Ipad = iTunes vending machine.

    Sucks beyond belief.

Gah! Means I can't use mine when I buy it in New York in August! Don't want to bring my MacBook. Maybe they can set it up at the Apple Store?

I plugged into my MBP but cancelled the sync & was able to use the iPad.

I could have sworn I heard that but maybe I am crazy. I'll dig through the video and find out if I'm nuts.

They are more than happy to set it up at the store. I got asked like 3 times if i needed help to set it up at the store.

Just for perspective, you don't have to sync it, only connect it. I have no idea why they need to activate it, but I don't see a reason it couldn't be done on any Mac/PC-with-iTunes in a store too. Also of note, it requires iTunes 9.1.

All you need to do is plug it into itunes. When I bought it the apple specialist offered to quickly activate it for me so I could start using it.

Cool! I'll let them set it up then. I can't believe the service at Apple Stores, we don't have anything like that in Sweden :)

At least that's good to hear. Ordered 3G version for a relative but will now cancel that order. Will tell her to buy it at her local Apple store, maybe the 4.0 version will be available soon. She wants it for web browsing, e-mail and some Apps so no need for sync. - she has no computer and thought this would be perfect.

    Data pin contact.

Well that's good news just plug unplug. I can tell ya a car charger wont do it. Must be other USB data pin that tells the ipad it's synced. Any mcgroobers out there have a paper clip work around?
