Hey all

i've been pulling my hair out for the last two days trying to get a set of Helvetica fonts to work. They're from a my old PC where i had adobe type manager installed and i've been moving everything over.

when i try and stick them in the fonts folder or use font book it doesn't work.

i tried that TransType program but the demo just teases you and lets you look at what it can convert - rather than actually helping you. and it would suck to throw down $200 just to fix this problem - but things are getting bad.

the fonts are .pfb with its paired .pfm

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Postscript PC fonts -- .pfm is the metrics files, .pfb the outlines. The Mac will not read them no matter how much you try...

You need something like Fontographer on the PC to convert them followed by a small utility that runs on the Mac (can't remember its name). Or... Fontographer on the Mac, but I've never had any success running Fontographer in Classic. :(

It's sad but Macromedia have done nothing with Fontographer for almost 10 years.

So... Fontlab & TransType are limited-functionality demos which aren't much help. Umm... you may have to bite the bullet and buy the software or the fonts for Mac.

But someone else may offer another solution: after all, the Mac can use PC TrueType fonts (apparently) so you may be able to find them somewhere...
