I have two external monitors (HP 27", LG 22") that I use with my brand new MacBook Air (Late 2020 M1 model).

-Both monitors work great with the MacBook on their own
-Both have their own USB-C to HDMI adaptor and their own HDMI cable. All of this equipment works separately.

But when I plug both monitors in at the same time, only one will work.

I've tried clicking "Detect Displays," to no avail. I've been searching online forums and found no answers.

Surely the MacBook can support two external monitors at the same time, right? What witchcraft do I need to do to get it to acknowledge both monitors at the same time?

surely not. This is a disappointing but well documented Apple limitation. officially, Only 1 external monitor for the M1 laptops, two for the M1 mini (1 tb3, 1 HDMI).

However, there are third party ways to connect multiple monitors to a M1. This guy did 6.

Almost curious how you’ve searched. Apple’s own tech specs for the devices even specify it’s 2 displays max, including the internal displays in laptops, so just 1 external.
