My biggest problem is the current influx of war movies based on recent military events: American Sniper, Act of Valor, etc.

First, having lost a few friends in the war, it hits too close to home for me. Second, there's the patriotism angle they seem to play (How can you not like this movie? You have to like this movie as an American!) And also, it seems to be pushing the Patriotism and love of country to make a profit.
I basically got abuse from some posters on here after describing American Sniper as propaganda...... I mean as a "War film" it was frankly farcical.

Distasteful propaganda, at that.

"I've got PTSD" :(

"Take someone to the firing range"

Magically cured.

It was so, so, so bad.

Did you watch the Generation Kill series when it was on? That was very good. War films are a bit of speciality of mine, but not ones with rose tinted glasses, that are aiming to get people to sign up.

No, I didn't watch the Generation Kill series, as it happens.

As someone with a background as a professional historian, I confess to cringing when US movies are promoted; they are so…….lacking in even the merest speck of subtlety, or nuance, and deeply and profoundly offend against my personal god of historical accuracy.

Now, Band of Brothers - which I did watch - was excellent, a meticulous series, very well acted and produced, an honourable exception to those programmes, or movies, which generate an inbuilt frisson of appalled horror when approaching that grim intersection where US movie making meets historical accuracy and awareness.

Generation Kill was good, I think it had a lot of crossover with the people involved in making Band of Brothers.

Whilst we're on the topic too, there's an excellent 3 part series called Generation War in English, its a German series (Unser Muetter, Unser Vuetter), following a group of friends through the second world war, 2 brothers in the army, 1 nurse, 1 actress, 1 Jewish guy.... Really very good.

Actually, I was working abroad when that particular series (Generation War) aired, and so missed it, but I read the reviews (excellent) and German colleagues assured me that it would be well worth watching.
