I’m curious if it’s common amongst others to match device capacities. I generally upgrade my iPhone, iPad or MacBook with a 512GB variant. However, I’m in the process of replacing all of my devices and am considering 256GB for my phone (in return period). I usually hover around 300-320GB with a good chunk of tv series and movies on it. If I cut it down to just my favorites I can have about 30-50GB available on a 256 (deleted stuff to see where the # would be).

$899 for the new 256GB MacBook Air (military discount) is also calling my name. Although, I’m likely to just pay for the 512–double capacity and quad-core. The reason I’m considering all of this is because I intend to have all my devices updated and then not swap anything out again for 2/3 years. I’ve sold everything recently and bought an 11 Pro 512GB. I’m debating if I’m better off staying with 512GB everything and paying a little extra or downsizing and saving a buck. I’m considering:
512, 512, 512 (50%)
256, 512, 512 (10%)
256, 256, 512 (40%)
All opinions, feedback and experiences welcomed :)

If you're needing to manage a 256GB device to fit your needs - it's not big enough for your needs. I'm using a 64GB device & keep around 15GB free. But if it was bigger, I'd fill it up with movies.

Only you know what you're usage is like.

Personally, I don't take a ton of photos and videos so 128GB is more than sufficient for me on iPhone. I don't really use my iPhone for watching.

It seems like you do so consider your annoyance level having to frequently manage content on the iPhone and not having enough space for all the content you may want to store there at the same time.

I definitely have a lot of apps, photos and music that I like to keep on the physical memory. All of that fits comfortably into 256. Tv and movies are more like a “what if”. What if I get stuck at the clinic (VA hospitals can have hellacious wait times sometimes) or am taking a day trip without my iPad. Just having a few series and movies can come in handy. I do think I’m leaning towards the 512 everything option just because I really want to stay the urge to upgrade yearly.

Lol, on the 12.9 I have some Disney, Pixar, MCU and DC movies as well as GoT s1-7. It's been pretty useful for unexpected babysitting. :p

I almost never leave home without an iPad. Unless I'll be walking all day in say, a theme park or doing some sightseeing, I always have either Pro 10.5 or Air 3 in my purse. No movies on the Air and just a handful of movies on the Pro 10.5. They're mostly dedicated to ebooks and manga.

Imo if anything else will give you anxiety, assuming your budget allows it, just get 512. I don't see the point in trying to go less unless you really don't have the budget.

For me personally, my PC laptop has 256GB SSD, and I do admit there are times I need to do some spring cleaning. However, my Android has 128GB, and I never even come close to filling it. This does give me a good gauge if I am looking to upgrade my devices. For a PC, 512GB becomes my minimum. However, 128GB is fine for me on my mobile.

How do you keep the Air 3 and the Pro apart? Are they different colours or have different cases?

Btw if you carry all GOT with you, have you tried the books already? I really enjoyed most of them!

Not for me. Any time I make an iDevice purchase I get the maximum capacity Apple offers at the time it's being sold. If I can't afford that at the time I wait until I can.

64GB iPhone 5, 128GB iPhone 6+, 128GB iPhone 6s+, 128GB iPad 6th Gen.

For my Macs, I will always buy the largest capacity I can afford and that they are capable of using. I say capable of using because my primary Macs are PowerPC of 1998-2006 vintage. Right now my Quad G5 has a 2TB boot drive and a 4TB secondary drive. I've got two RAID docks that give me 4TB and a single external enclosure that has a 3TB HD.

My 500mhz PM G4 that I'm using as a NAS has 2x 3TB hard drives. The 2008 MBP I am typing this on currently has a 500GB SSD and my 17" PowerBook G4 has a 128GB mSATA SSD. My 2006 17" MBP has a 500GB HD, while my 2009 Mac Mini has a 320GB HD. My two other G5's have 2x 1TB drives and my 12" PowerBook G4 has a 250GB HD.

When I replace drives I try to get either the same or larger capacity.

Also, I'm not locked in to a drive capacity because all of my Macs can be opened and have their drives replaced.

would you have the same movies on all devices?

Going 512 across the board I would. On my 512 iPhone I loaded up all the movies and shows I watch most and still have 230 left. I had been pondering downsizing the iPhone for that reason. I don’t neeeed them on it, but it is nice to have for “emergencies”.

It’s within my budget. Over the last couple of years I’ve just been having those “why the heck am I paying this much money for an incremental update here, face lift there” kind of thoughts. So, this year I’m buying a new iPad and Mac—already upgraded my phone. Then, hopefully, I will hold my peace for at least 2 years (iOS wise) without swapping anything out.
I find it odd that 4x increase from 64-256 iPhone is a $150 jump, while a 2x 256-512 jump is an additional $200.

Different colored cases plus the camera bump, LED flash and speakers.

I read the books first. There are actually a number of changes in the TV show that I didn't like particularly by season 5 when they started running out of material.

I enjoy the Dunk and Egg tales more than the main ASoIaF series, though. More than Winds of Winter, I'd prefer to see the continuation to Dunk and Egg's adventures. Wonder how many cousins removed Hodor/Walder and Brienne were. :D

Maybe you can just keep it on one device and stream on others in emergencies. Seems way overkill otherwise

but to each their own. I have a 512 Macbook and only 64 gb iphone. Sold my ipad cos of no use anymore after a few years

If I were to get the Pro Max, I’d go for the 512GB because my Note 9 is 512GB. I rather go big as I don’t like to have to be concerned of how much things I can keep on my phone. It’s just so freeing to have a lot of space!

Afaik, you can't stream iTunes videos from one iOS device to another. Doable with 3rd party apps but if the media streamer is not the active app, it usually times out after 10 minutes or less (background app refresh and RAM cleanup?). Yep, I've tried.

Only device that can reliably act as server would be the MacBook. On long overseas vacations, I actually do bring my Windows laptop with Plex + 2-4TB HDD + router.

I think the poster was referring to using Apple TV+ app to watch my movies without downloading them first. That can be done on multiple devices. However, that’s why I’m going the 512 route. That way I can download whatever I want and keep across all my devices without concern. Since I’m keeping these devices for at least 2 years (Hopefully), the price bump is worth it.

Caveat there is internet connectivity.

Usually, when I have free time to watch videos, that also means the internet is either crappy or unavailable. Otherwise, I'd be online reading tech forums and blogs. Right now, I'm entertaining myself with beginner-level Raspberry Pi-related articles. :p

I never regret getting too much. I always do if I go too little. In the grand scheme of things, you're already paying at least $1150 for the device. The extra $200 isn't much compared to that when the alternative is spending $1350 or ~$575 depreciation + sales tax because you did an early upgrade due to not having enough storage.

With all my movies I could use about 200GB but I don’t travel loads al those movies are on my device and I can just use data to watch them if needed. Don’t see a need to download them

I’m going for 128GB for my next pro max phone providing they go to 128GB which I’m expecting they will
