I've always backed up to bootable clones, but with Apple clearly wanting the user (as in the person who owns the #@!%%#@ computer) doing anything OS-related it seems this isn't a hill worth dying on. I'll continue using CCC, but will work on learning how to recover the OS using Apple's procedures when either it or the media it's on goes kaput.
Seems reasonable. The only downside to this is that it's probably slow in case of an emergency, where you previsouly could have simply copied your latest clone over and continued with whatever you were doing.

CCC 6.1.2-b2 now available if you have beta downloads enabled.
  • Changed
Snapshot thinning on the source and snapshot/archive thinning on the destination is now skipped for restore tasks.
  • Changed
Fixed a cosmetic issue in the snapshot navigator when a subfolder is selected as the source.
  • Changed
Made a few small adjustments to how task configuration is handled when selecting the current startup disk as the destination.
  • Fixed
Addressed an issue that could cause CCC to errantly report that multiple volumes were present with the same unique identifier.
The changes mentioned are whats new with this beta 2 compared to beta 1

Note: made a fresh Legacy Bootable Clone on external HDD using CCC 6.1.2-b2 against a MacOS 12.4 RC volume successfully with M1 Max MBP.
Could I ask where you got the 12.4 RC installer? My iMac System Updater preference pane throws a "permissions error" (am enrolled in a Dev account) and the Mr. Macintosh page doesn't have it up yet.

I got it OTA with dev beta profile, the public beta profile will work also. Just restore defaults, reboot, and install profile again is what I would first try.

Thanks for the reply. After some issues with Apple's software not recognizing my Apple ID password, I got the Public beta software installed, only to have that "Permissions error" pop up again.
It seems I will have to find the cause of that error first, before I can use the Software update pane.
No clue to where to look, but somehow I think it is a bad bom file somewhere in the receipts.
Thanks anyway.

Try installing in safe mode. Also check System Preferences->Security & Privacy and under the Privacy tab, see if Full Disk Access and/or Files and Folders are enabled for the OS installer.

Sorry, didn't see your last reply in time to try that, Safe mode (have to remember that idea) or the Full Disk Access idea. I did successfully get the 12.4 update installed - by creating a new user, which showed up as already being enrolled in the public beta program, and the Software Update pane works in that new user! (mumble mumble, whaat is it in my main user's data that causes that "Permissions error"?)
So Monterey 12.4 is installed now, is this a RC release? or the real 12.4?
In any case it seems fine running OCLP 0.4.4. Thanks for your time and effort!

As of today, 5-13-2022, the Mr. Macintosh site was last updated on 5/4/22, and the latest Monterey beta there is 12.4 21F5071b, which is the B4, not the 12.4 RC 21F79 mentioned above. Thanks for posting the Mr. Macintosh info, but I already knew about it and checked to see if the 12.4 RC installer was noted there. It was not and still isn't, but because your post suggested the latest RC was up, I opened the Mr. Macintosh page again, only to find that you were mistaken. Wasted time. Of course this is not that big a deal, but please be more careful from now on.
Check your facts before posting, it will save everyone time and effort.
I am sure that site will be updated in good time.
In the meantime, did you see my post #212? I was able to get the RC update by creating another user, and downloading it from the Software Update system preferences pane. Job done, and it is running fine with today's OCLP 0.4.5 nightly.
Thanks to the developers!

  • Changed
Snapshot thinning on the source and snapshot/archive thinning on the destination is now skipped for restore tasks.

Fixed a cosmetic issue in the snapshot navigator when a subfolder is selected as the source.
  • Changed
Made a few small adjustments to how task configuration is handled when selecting the current startup disk as the destination (e.g. to a restore task).
  • Fixed
Addressed an issue that could cause CCC to errantly report that multiple volumes were present with the same unique identifier.
  • Changed
Fixed the window location of the Dashboard window when multiple screens are present. The Dashboard window will now be presented next to the menubar icon that was clicked, rather than retaining its previous window position.
  • Changed
The minimum data threshold for "When files are modified on the source" tasks is now 1MB (i.e. 0.001GB).
  • Changed
Addressed an issue specific to macOS Catalina in which a verification of files on the source or destination would errantly report System volume files as missing.
  • Changed
Resolved a latency issue that a handful of users were noticing when switching between tasks. We tracked the latency down to poor performance of Apple's "nsattributedstringagent" service on macOS Monterey. In some cases the service was crashing repeatedly, and when macOS throttled its relaunch, there would be a noticeable delay when CCC attempted to render the Task Plan. We no longer rely on that macOS service for rendering the Task Plan.
  • Changed
Fixed a couple cases where the background color of a view was not switching automatically when the system appearance was changed in System Preferences (e.g. Dark to Light).
  • Fixed
Corrected the error handling in cases where unreadable folders are encountered on the source.
  • Changed
Corrected the presentation of dropped OneDrive placeholder files for pre-Monterey users.
  • Changed
Addressed a race condition that could occur if two tasks try to simultaneously mount the same NAS volume. One task would "win", the other task would wait indefinitely for the system's NetAuthSysAgent service to reply.

I happily abandoned CCC long time ago, once I realized that bootable clones are obsolete for troubleshooting purposes. Yet Bombich still had the nerve to immediately release a paid update. So CCC is just another data backup method. Garageware.

Don´t talk your language. CCC is simply the one and only.

Disagree with you completely.
Not 'garageware' as Sumo99 said, "Hall of Fame" is more appropriate. Mike Bombich and his small but excellent crew, have worked very hard to keep up with Apple's development, over the transmission from Mojave, to Catalina, Big Sur and now the continuing changes in Monterey. Unlike many impersonal corporations, they provide a warm "Humane" response in their communications with their customers and offer an extremely high degree of expertise in their software. I have paid for the updates, each and every one, and will again when Mike "has the nerve" and asks for it. Great value for the price.
Kudos to CCC and Mike Bombich and the crew at CCC!

Also disagree.
I find cloned backups ideal "for troubleshooting purposes".

You are 100% correct. I can not say enough good about CCC. It has been more than lifesaver in recovering data; especially from external hd and internal drives that have become corrupt. Example iTunes library is over 14tb; currently stored on 18 tb drives. CCC was able to recover and restore over 15 years worth of work. This happened because an enclosure manufacture did not disclose a problem with the firmware on their enclosures that would erase all the date if you moved the drive from one enclosure to the other. CCC just the best software ever for me. Apple needs to allow bootable backups to be easily created on Monterey and ever OS going forth. I have been using Macs since the Motorola days; almost 30 Years. iMacs saved Apple so they could create their current products. Removal of the 27" iMac was the biggest slap in the face Apple has given to those of us who shed blood in the ears days of iMac, MacBook, Airports, etc. Please don't tell me to give feedback to Apple; totally worthless with the current Apple.

Yes. CCC has saved me from so many disasters, saved so many hundreds hours that is almost indecent. I always say: if you only have money for buying just one app, buy CCC.

I used CCC from the beginning.
Without easy to create and to use bootable backups it is much less worth than before.

Now it has to compete with Apple's solution called "time machine".
And time machine is good enough.

CCC could be of use if it could easily synchronize i.e. a Mac Studio with a Macbook Pro.
But I see a lot of problems with the content of apps like amazon kindle.
