Is there a way for CCC to detect when an external disk is connected and automatically backup?

I can't see anything in the settings and couldn't find any info about it.

Nice one. Thanks.

Shame you can't merge both schedule and connection.

CCC will auto mount and unmount a disk to perform a backup on a schedule. I do that nightly so I don't have to have my boot clone and others mounted all the time.

I use a portable disk on my MacBook that isn’t always plugged in.

Ah gotcha. So what are you trying to accomplish? Not have it auto backup when you attach unless it's at the specified time?

When I connect my external it's sometimes connected for hours on end, and that point it would be nice if the schedule kicked in. But I also want it to immediately back up when I initially connect it, because it's not always connected for a long time.

That's exactly how it works for me by default.

Simply set up a separate scheduled task. CCC will run it and backup if the disk is attached.
