hey guys - I did a simple backup from source 18TB disk to an external 18TB disk and it shows backup completed but the destination only has 8TB while the source has 12TB. I can't find any section for the whole logs or what files weren't copied over. any idea why there should be this big a discrepancy? Thanks

Local snapshots? With CCC, if you look at your cloned drive, anything under snapshots?

I chose safety net off. See below. Ideally I'll go through all the documentation but had to create a rush emergency backup and just downloaded the software after Time Machine failed

Source drive showing 8.73TB used

Destination drive showing 5TB used. Shouldn't it show 8.73TB used since backup was completed successfully?

First pics shows that your source drive has a 3 TB snapshot. CCC won’t copy this snapshot hence the 5 TB vs 8 no?

My guess is I installed this HDD back in March 2023 and totally forgot. I right clicked on Reveal in Finder and then I clicked on a random file and Get info shows /private/tmp/ccc_16777244@230424205910. When browsing to that directory, I did find the snap8722 which is 3TB

Does CCC save snapshots automatically? I don't believe I would have chosen this option as there's no point of backing up to one's own HDD. If I unmount, will it simply delete it? Or best to keep it since it helps compare to files already backed up when I backup again in the future?

Thanks

Don't want to maybe give you a wrong answer but I've use CCC for years and when you put in a request for guidance they are very prompt. You'll have an answer in hours or , it being the weekend, a day at most. I think you have control of snapshots and they can be deleted.

CCC won’t backup snapshots as far as I know (maybe there is an hidden option for that?). You just have to right click the snapshot in the CCC app on your source drive and choose « delete ».

If Safety Net is off, CCC won’t keep the files modified since last backup…

Can you explain in simple language why a snapshot was saved and do you think this was automatically done in the background

Was your source drive a backup of another drive or is it a MacOS boot drive? If it’s your boot drive, MacOS makes regular snapshots when you use Time Machine. There is also an option for CCC to keep snapshots. I see that your 3TB snapshot was one made by CCC.

***Looking at you first pic, CCC made a snapshot of the source drive as you « set » the CCC snaphots to « on ». Simple as that. Sorry to repeat :)

***Is this an SSD with MacOS or a simple mechanical data drive (old generation hard drive)? Just curious?

The source drive was also an external hard drive and I never set up any automatic actions

My only use case is cloning the entire external hard drive to another external hard drive, so do you think the software automatically created a snapshot or I had to do it manually sorry it’s been 18 months so I can’t exactly remember
