In fairness, at least the gas stations generally don't charge extra for debit cards now. A lot of other small businesses do though, despite it not being allowed. And good luck trying to argue Visa rules to the clerk behind the counter.

(It is allowed for credit cards though.)
True but I would never use a debit card at any gas station. That's where most of the fake swipers are located so you give away your PIN to some minimum wage thief and if you try to contest it, forget it. Debit cards are the same as giving cash to a thief. At least with credit cards you can dispute any transaction and get your money back before it's gone for good.

That's the way it works at BoA, and will work on Wells Fargo and Chase.

This is apparently going to be a software, only change to the ATMs that will allow them to bring up a QR code on the screen that you will scan with your phone, validating with your fingerprint within their app (Since developers can now use Touch ID). No thanks for me. I rarely use non-Wells Fargo ATMs, because the fees that they charge are stupid. I generally have to be very hard up to use one. Given he infrequency of using third party ATMs, the hassle of having another App on my phone that I would rarely use, and the annoyance of having to launch that app and go through the BS, no thanks.

Now, when WF activates the NFC readers on their ATMs, and I can just use my Apple Watch to withdraw cash I will be a happy camper. Ease of use. No pulling out my card. No skimmers. Yes!

Sweet! ETA? Source? I'm very curious about this and haven't heard much about it... off to do a Google search...

Here in the UK RBS and Natwest both have apps where you can go into them and authorise a withdrawal without your card, all you do is use the code generated by the app. You can set Touch ID as a means of getting into the app on iPhones as well. I think this is a much better way of doing things than using QR codes. Just use NFC machines.

Cash, Haha, the only place I use cash for is the coke vending machine in the jobs canteen, except for that place there is no reason to carry cash.
And, it's much safer too for shop holders since they have little cash on hand, means less to no robberies.
But hey, the US is so far behind (regarding banking), there are even third world countries which have better systems than the US.

i see the apple community is very excited over something the rest of the world has been using for years again

cutting edge guys

Don't we already have this? In my Natwest app I can get cash from any cash machine in the UK without a fee and without my card, all it requires is my logging in to my account with touch ID

How's that gonna work? Scan QR Code on ATM, then choose card in your Wallet to In-App ApplePay with and process the withdrawal? That's the best way I can see it working....at least it would use ApplePay for security.

A worse variation would be to have to somehow enroll and store your ATM card within a separate (less secure) app.

No, you use NFC and then once the phone/card registers with the reader, you can go about your business.

Think a little bit. QR codes are outdated.

How many people still use ATMs with their horrible fees? I just get cash when I do business at a store that offers cash back.
Some banks like USAA refund ATM fees charged by any 3rd party bank/ATM. The refund is typically paid within 72 hours. You should do business with a better bank.

While ATMs aren't likely going anywhere, I see them as an ever decreasing means of getting cash since almost any grocery store will do for withdrawals.

However, many people (such as myself) like to deposit cash or checks into an ATM, or print out stamps.

small businesses that take cash - only - are only fooling themselves-
• more likely to dip into takings therefore showing a lower profit and the knock on effect means lower borowing for a mortgage application
• Red light on the radar - more likely to have HMRC / US IRS investigation = unpleasant unnecessary hassle
• customers will shop elsewhere as many don't carry cash

Overall false ecomomy living on the edge - these small businesses -#cashonlynotworthit

My favorite is when they only take Visa and MasterCard, as if that extra .5% is a big deal on a $5 purchase.

What's the point of this if you still need to swipe your card to open the door to the ATM?

The only bit I don't like about that pic is now a robber just has to wait to see an iPhone being held up. "Held up", get it? The robber will get the cash and a locked iPhone to pawn off for the trouble...

I joined a credit union years ago, I'm in the US - courtesy of the Credit Union's Co-Op Network I can get at my funds fee-free at any 7-11, Rite-Aid, Costco, other CU in the US plus get other account services like cashier's checks at most other CUs.

And, like you, I use the "National Bank of Safeway" option as well... :D

It's way easier to just pull out your card.. hardly NO one will use this.. and whats worse.. the only reason they are doing this is because they just don't want to upgrade their ATM's with NFC..

I think the same people would use it, who currently use Apple Pay because they have their phone, but not their debit card. Being able to get cash without your wallet, is nice no matter how it's done.

Not to mention the millions of people whose phone does not have NFC.

Why is everyone trying to QR Codes. It seems like 2 steps forward, 1 step back with these companies.

Cause Apple won't let app devs use the nfc inside the iPhone. Only Apple apps can use the nfc. And stores don't want to use Apple pay cause they dont need another middleman taking a cut of the profits.

Well, I can say that the entire country of Canada does not have this yet, and if you read the posts on the forum you will see that there is not much fanfare coming from the readers. Troll much?

ohh,

canada :(

4 pages about old tech is not much fanfare? okay
