This cannot come soon enough for me. I hope my car supports my Apple Watch soon. It would be great to not have to carry the giant key fob with me. One less thing I need. If only I could get rid of my license and passport, I would be overjoyed.

Agreed. BMWs have HUMONGOUS key fobs.

Hopefully cars will have a backup method to unlock when Apple starts mandating vehicles be on the latest car to use the app

Still don't understand the need, at least for some cars - which would probably be the ones to get it. I have a Subaru - I leave the key in my pocket - grab the door handle and it unlocks - leave the car touch the outside of the handle and the car locks - don't need to take key out of pocket to start run the car. So what will this give me - ok the ability to "lend" a car key - which I don't think I have ever done.
Obviously all facts not known yet but having to take phone out and put it close to car is a negative to me.
The cars will have to have function plus if the stuff is right an app designed to work with it. I would think any car that has that will already have functions similar to what I have.
We will see

What it would give you is one less thing to carry (big car key). Good in my book.

I've got it with my Model 3 and its very nice to be fair. I'd not be rushing for it as an essential feature but having my keys in my pockets is pretty nice. Its just eliminating the next thing from the classic "wallet, phone, keys, camera" check before leaving the house :)

I guess this is useful if you lose or forget your keys. I keep my key in my pocket and just open the door via comfort access. There is no way that I would ever deliberately leave my keys at home. What would happen if your car had a flat battery or the electronic door mechanism failed. At least with comfort access ,you can extract the physical key from the electronic fob bit and open the door manually. You couldn't do that with a phone

CarKey requires NFC to function, so it is something that needs to be implemented by car makers.

Can third party After market not install NFC? I'm doing a ground up restoration and can't understand why it couldn't be included.

I just hope that this also means that there will be a HomeKey and OfficeKey.

Android users can already unlock our office doors using NFC and without unlocking their phone or pressing a button in an app.

I would love to do the same with my apple watch.

5 years too late Apple, why so slow to join the automotive technology revolution? Oh wait too busy making $45K Computers for the 3 people that can afford them.

If you've been a BMW owner for a long time, you would know they WOULD DEFINITELY require you to pay for an "upgrade" or just buy a new car for you to use this feature.

It's not just BMW, the auto industry as a whole does not put resources into adding features to existing cars. You'll be lucky to get a bug fix or 2. Now, BMW deserves plenty of flack for charging for wireless carplay but I believe they walked that back.

Tesla does regular feature updates, but they also aren't releasing a new model year every year. Hopefully that catches on.

Giant key fob? Not nearly as big as tears and rage once your phone bugs out and bricks while you are on the vacation in the mountains. Oh it will happen, don't doubt it for a second.

We have NFC on key fobs, and have had it for over a to a decade. Toyota, Kia, Honda and others have had keyless entry, keyless trunk, and keyless ignition for more than 10 years. Why would this feature be "new"? It seems almost "old tech" by almost any standard of measure. The car detects the key in your pocket when you are outside the car, or attempt to open the trunk.

Why would this be "impossible" to incorporate into a Smart Phone with a built-in NFC? Seems it would relatively easy to have the phone scan the VIN, Make, Model, Year and then pair it with your existing dongle.

So.... how will we know if our car will be compatible with this feature?

Example: I have a 2019 Chevy Equinox. Will it be compatible?

Your Sonata lets you unlock and start your car using NFC on an Android phone or just lets you use an app to unlock it? None of the Hyundai's I have considered off that.

Hyundai has had this for years. My 2 old leases, a Hyundai for my wife and a Genesis for myself both had this option. It's a bit clunky in practice, namely getting your phone out of your pocket and waiting the few seconds for the app to open, communicate with the vehicle and then send the command. This varied to a few seconds to maybe half a minute, semi annoying for multiple car trips (especially in the winter with freezing hands, wearing gloves/coat, etc). I have this on my current Acura RDX lease but Acura's software is much worse and slower than Hyundai's. I would really LOVE for Apple to get this out the door as my lease is up next year and this would factor into my new car decision. I wish it was backwards compatible though.

I haven't read into it much but does the Apple Carkey solution work if you are just near the vehicle, or do you actually have to pull your phone out, unlock it and access a key press on the app? If it's the latter then I'm much less excited and would rather just have a credit card fob that some automakers make that can just go into my wallet. Until the US goes digital with drivers licenses I'm always going to have a slim wallet with me anyway.

Here's what CWallace is referencing.
It only seems to be on the Sonata, introduced last April. Not one of the cars of theirs I was considering. I hope they add it to others (and maybe even make it available on cars already out there (unlikely for car manufacturers).[/quote]

Digital Key is not new. It's in the process of have version 3.0 certified by the CCC.

Do you mean Hyundai’s implementation or the spec itself? The spec is not new, just has not yet been widely adopted.

The spec isn't new. IIRC, Hyundai implementation is based on Release 2.0. I think it will be more widely adopted when Release 3.0 is certified (soon according to rumor). Almost every car company and tech firm is a member of the CCC, so I think we will have no shortage of options. https://carconnectivity.org/members/ Backwards compatibility on older models? Here's hoping, but history says car manufacturers will more than likely link this to some Tech Package add-on. The aftermarket usually takes care of backwards compatibility and they are well represented in the CCC.
