I didn't know if anybody heard anything on this but I read on other forums that a cord was necessary to operate Carplay due to hardware technology constraints.

With the new (rumored) cord-free next gen iPhone, has anybody heard about a workaround to allow Carplay to work on the new phone?

That would really suck. I just bought a 2020 Toyota SUV and had to trade in my sedan due to back pain. I really don't want to have to buy another car in 2 years just to be able to use (wireless) CarPlay.

Just when I jumped mostly back into the Apple ecosystem (11 Pro Max, AW5, AirPods Pro) I read about this possibility...Apple's "courage" is getting out of control. When it comes to cars the tail is never wagging the dog. I'll have to leave Apple once and for all.

1st there are 3rd party head units like Pioneer offering wireless for cheaper than a new car:)

as mentioned many of the new cars come wireless carplay now. At least the german brands vw, Audi, bmw, mercedes

What cord-free next gen iPhone? We already have the iPhone 11 and it's not the phone that doesn't support wireless CarPlay it's the CAR. Some vehicles support it and some do not. Mine does not and I'm using wired CarPlay. Somewhere on these forums, someone was talking about some kind of bluetooth adaptor to make this possible. Don't know if they were able to make it work.

#1, that rumor was probably completely bogus in that short of a time frame, because how would Apple be able to reboot/restore the iPhone without the lightning port? They need it to troubleshoot and diagnose software issues. There’s no way that technology will proceed itself in less than two years without the lightning port.

#2, Wireless CarPlay will continue to expand into future lineups. For now, wired carplay is perfectly suitable given the existence of the lightning port moving forward.

The vast majority of cars are currently wired CarPlay and it seems to be the manufacturers that are dragging their heels on integrating the wireless CarPlay functionality whilst some third party makers are making them available.

My gut is that if the phone does go completely wireless then it will open the door for someone to make some sort of adaptor, if Apple dont themselves, that allows said wireless phone to be used with a wired only system. Whenever these things have popped up in the past this is what has happened such as the adaptor for headphones to plug into the lightning port etc. There is already a third party adaptor that allows you to go wireless with wired only car systems.

My new car has a large touch screen display that works with CarPlay and Android Auto. I don't want to buy a 3rd party head unit. I'll deal with wireless CarPlay in a few years when / if it comes up. Until then I'll enjoy the car.

Currently have an Audi S4, I have new back issues and needed an SUV. The SQ5 is severely overpriced, and I love Audi. BMW doesn't really work with Android Auto, looked at X3, (some do, some don't, no idea when it'll all happen). Mercedes is great, looked at a couple SUVs but the price skyrockets very quickly.

Anyone ever try "CPLAY2air" at carplay2air.com? Looks tempting to try, at least.

[oops, just noticed this is an old thread. DOH!]

While I agree the port on the iPhone will hang around a bit longer.

However Apple has devices like the Watch, HomePod, and AppleTV 4k (AirPods too a much lesser extent) that have the ability to be rebooted, restored, troubleshot, diagnosed plus developed for wirelessly due to lack of port. Diagnostic ports for tear downs are hidden internally on the HomePod, under the band for the Watch and dont exist on the ATV4k.

I think we'll still need to see an improvement in wireless charging and I think we will see less popular device in Apples lineup make the move first like the iPod or iPad. Like the MacBook and USB C this will motivate manufacturers to get on board.

The ATV 4K has one, it's hidden in the Ethernet port.

I stand corrected, thank you! That is actually really interesting.

However this was a discovery 2 years after the AppleTV 4k was released without dev support. So much like the Watch and HomePod we've been restoring it, developing for it, running diagnostics on it, etc completely wirelessly via Xcode and/or built in methods.

A wireless iPhone would likely have something similar for Apple engineers to tap into if they really needed too to avoid soldering directly each time.

Good catch though, leave it to Apple to get something like that past tear downs for YEARS lol.

You should probably keep the misinformation on the other forum. There won't be a cordless iPhone for at least 3-4 years which is when the iPhone 12 will get a redesign..
