So... now that CarPlay will support 3rd party navigation apps... since Apple is keen on keeping CarPlay an eyes free experience, can we expect said apps to also have access to Siri? “Siri navigate to ______ with Waze’l

I doubt it will be that integrated...ever...default will be Maps with Siri.

Apple always adds an extra step in the process when there are alternative apps available. Best case is that they let you set a "default" map app on the phone and it fills the address/POI in when you ask Siri, "Directions to Home." or something like that.

I'm REALLY interested to see how much integration there is, but my guess is that it will work pretty much like it does today when you use Waze or Google with CarPlay except it will show the actual map on the screen with minor touch screen options to navigate and enter info...maybe...I would not expect any voice integration outside of the app itself. Once it is opened though...

Can't developers use Siri shortcuts to accomplish integration with Siri or are specific functions disallowed like navigation?

Yes..they can..but I would expect it to do nothing more than "open" the app if suggested (and not even sure they will allow that!). And it usually applies to apps that do not have a direct competitive app from Apple available.

Again, not sure when any info will leak from the Google/Waze side as to how integrated it will be, but I'm still guessing it will need to be manually started from the phone like you CAN do today with Apple Maps and CarPlay and simply show up on the screen. I'm sure they will allow the integrated Google or Waze voice integration once opened, but I doubt Siri will be involved at all.

From watching the WWDC presentations on Siri Shortcuts (and seeing how Apple already allows WhatsApp to be accessed from Siri), I have to disagree. I absolutely think people will be able to ask Siri to navigate somewhere using Waze or Google Maps if Google updates the iOS apps to allow donation of the intents. Plus, I think Apple would run into some antitrust problems if it allows this for some but not all. At the end of the day, I suspect people are going to be blown away by how much more Siri and their iPhones will be able to do after this goes live.

Do you think they will allow you to set a default map app? Or will you have to ask to use Waze, Google or Maps every time? (edit: That's what you have to do with WhatsApp, correct?? Tell it every time??)

I understand setting it up as a shortcut...but that's totally different and don't think will be used very much by the average user...and I think that is what Apple is counting on.

I wish there was data out there showing how many people use which map app. I have all of the map apps downloaded, but never use Google (hate the UI), so "downloads" to me isn't a good indication of use.

Doubtful. For example, I use Amazon music and cannot use voice commands even though it has a CarPlay app. It is pretty annoying to get the "I cannot control 3rd party apps..." response when trying to use CarPlay and 3rd party music. Maps will most likely be the same.

That is really only true assuming that you already set up that location and then created a shortcut to it, for example "Navigate Home with Waze". Apple doesn't allow arbirary input with shortcuts at all so you wouldn't be able to ask it to navigate home without having set up a shortcut previously, and you absolutely can not say Navigate to *some address* with waze because it would have no way to get that address.

Or, if its somewhere you go frequently at that particular time, using a particular mapping app, Shortcuts may simply suggest "Navigate to xxx using Google Maps?"

I just have a hard time Apple will make it that easy to use someone else’s app...I guess we’ll see in about 6 weeks.

I would have expected Waze on CarPlay when you know where freezes over. And yet!

I think Apple is entering a new relationship era with Google. Google needs Apple for ad revenue. Apple wants people using CarPlay. Voila!

That's true, I don't think that that can be invoked with Siri though, only on the lockscreen (unless they have integrated that into CarPlay but I haven't seen it.)

I don’t think Apple needs people using CarPlay as much as you think. My own personal survey of renting multiple cars every week, vast majority have CarPlay versus Android. Typically, CarPlay only or at a minimum, access to both on some vehicles.

Most people aren’t like “us”...sophisticated enough to actually download different mapping apps and actually use them. And I’m being totally serious. I travel constantly and always surprised at people that just use Maps as a default because they have an iPhone. When I ask why...”works fine for me...” is the typical answer.

And I think it does work “fine” for most...even outside of the USA. This forum and Google forums are filled with people who care to complain (or praise). The average user gets where they need to go...or figures out a way around any gaps in Apple’s shortcomings.

You will be able to tie those suggestions to a Siri invocation phrase, but you'll have to set it up (for now, anyways) from the Siri & Search dialog in Settings. There's a little "+" sign next to the suggested shortcuts where you can add your unique (as you want it to be) Siri phrase.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m almost certain CarPlay and android auto go hand in hand. If the car supports one, it supports the other. It’s part of the same package.

Ummm...that’s not true at all. Many car companies support CarPlay only or Android Auto only. You may be able to plug in your Android device (or iPhone for that matter) and use it through the stereo system, but that doesn’t mean it has either CarPlay or Android Auto.

And a quick search shows I was way off on my assumption, but maybe it is due to the type of cars I typically drive.

Android Auto is available on over 400 models of cars while CarPlay is on about half of that. But I didn’t go through the lists to see which cars, so not sure which is used more based on device type and car.

Just found this article, but didn’t dig into the car lists since I’m too busy driving around New Jersey and Philadelphia today with CarPlay...

https://www.techradar.com/news/apple-carplay-vs-android-auto

And correction...after a quick look, this article came out just about 6 months ago and incorrectly states that CarPlay supports over 200 models while Android Auto supports over 400. Both sites clearly claim they support over 400. Anti Apple fake news right from the get go...hah.
