Anyone in UK have a CarPlay unit fitted aftermarket can recommend and answer a few questions please, also any pics of units fitted would be great.

Which are the best units? e.g. Pioneer seem to have loads of models and tbh I'm not sure on the difference between them all.

Is there anything you lose when fitting as in functionality of what was there, controls, display etc. Does existing display, e.g. Like on a Kuga or Mokka still work and show afterwards?

Would any units be upgradable to the (hopefully) wireless CarPlay that seems to be coming?

Anything I should look for, be aware of etc? What happens on an iOS update e.g. v9 to 10, did it break any compatibility with the CarPlay unit?

Basically I would want DAB, biggest screen could, compatibility with existing screen, extra parking camera fitted to show on screen, steering wheel controls still work for radio etc.

Thanks

Yes, I'm in the UK and i have CarPlay fitted, but it a standard to 2 Audis, S5 and an R8
I wouldn't touch carplay, it sucks and is not nice to use at all.

However it all depends on what the starting point is i guess.
Both these Audis have the virtual cockpit which is much smooth and nicer to use by comparison.

What's so bad about it please? I agree it's a little slow development and Apple being Apple only allowing certain apps etc.

So yours is standard from the manufacturer? Least you have the choice then though.

I will probably be getting a car with no screen in it whatsoever so I'm thinking to get one and have CarPlay and then it's better anyway.

But I'm not sure on install, what I'd lose, functionality wise, steering controls still work etc.

It's built in yes, it comes with the "Navigation high" pack so on the S5 you have a dedicated centre screen as well as the VC. On the R8 it's even worse as you don't get a centre screen only the VC, so a section of the VC is used to display CarPlay icons.

Bad? it's the dated interface and the limitation of the system. So for example the Audi car supports multiple phones all connected at the same time. if i connect my mobile to CarPlay (cable), it takes over and you can only connect to the one phone. The input is poor compared to the touch pad and thumb wheels for Audi and voice control is not as good as the Audi one either. It feels like its 5 years or so behind.

The number of apps is limited as you say. It wont let you play video, the navigation function is not as good as the google maps built into the car. It's just poor vs the standard fit system. But as i mentioned previously, it all depends on the starting point. if you have a 5 year old VW or something, then CarPlay might be better when compared to what that was shipped with..

Someone else's review.

This is a good example of what i see when using CP,

Thanks will have a look. My car won't be high end and won't have even a screen in probably so any screen will be better!

Agree it looks dated, but it's basically to copy from the iPhone for familiarity, and to be fair there isn't much else you can do to display apps etc, Andtoid nigh on looks the same to me.

Not sure how Andtoid auto looks on an in car screen.

Thanks
