Cartography

I'm about to start designing a vector map in illustrator for a small town and want to make something real nice. Just wondering if anyone knows good websites, blogs for tips and some inspirations on creating maps and cartography in general.

Did some research... My city (second largest in New England just behind Boston) uses this.

The results are pretty awesome.

That looks pretty interesting. I ended up just using illustrator and carefully tracing over the municipality drawings with the pen tool, also using google maps for some parts that needed clarification. Just kept it simple. If your ever lost in Cochrane, AB Canada…

There is a job opening in my town for a cartographer (graphic designer it says). They want someone with 24 months experience though. Looks exciting, but I could only handle it for so long.
