I just bought a series 6 SS. My old watch is a series 4 SS, which has some minor scratches on the watch sides from usual wear. Do you use a case? Some of the transparent cases even seem to dull the appearance of the SS compared to the naked look and appear cheap IMO.

Watches are bulky enough with no "case" over them. These electronic watches also have short lifetimes too as new models come out. No one expects to keep an Apple watch for 40 years. When your "6" gets banged up you will buy an "8".

It's like those peoe wh put plastic over the sofa, makes it look ugly even on day one.

I bought Ti which can be expected to be softer (easier to scratch) than SS, and I'll never put a case on it.

You're 100% right that cases appear cheap. You bought a $800 wrist ornament, you can't be scared to expose it to things that wrists normally experience! (Including bumps and dings.)

The whole point of the SS in my mind is the look. I always buy SS and never use a case and yes, they got dinged up, but that's what happens to watches. I also always choose Apple Care Plus.
