Ended up purchasing the following Zagg leather skin to protect the back. It appears to be compatible with a smart cover, however, this would need to be confirmed. For my use, didn't see much of a need for a screen protector that's attached to the back cover.

The Zagg Leather Skin in the Brown Premium Alligator was purchased last weekend for my mother's Christmas gift. She loves prints!
