iPhone accessory maker Casely reissued a recall for its faulty Power Pod wireless power bank (via The Verge) after one of the affected units resulted in the death of a 75-year-old woman and another exploded on a plane.

Casely first issued the recall in April 2025 through the Consumer Product Safety Commission. At that time, the company said that the power banks could overheat and ignite, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. A total of 51 people had reported incidents where the battery overheated, expanded, or caught fire, and there were six minor burn injuries.

Since then, there have been an additional 28 reports, including two serious incidents. In August 2024, a woman in New Jersey was charging her phone with a Casely power bank on her lap, and it caught fire and exploded. She had second- and third-degree burns, and later died from complications from her injuries.

In February 2026, a 47-year-old woman was charging her cell phone with the power bank on an airplane when it caught fire and exploded, resulting in first-degree burns. Airlines have introduced more restrictive limits on power banks due to incidents like this.

Casely sold 429,200 power banks, which were branded as the Casely "Power Pod" with MagSafe compatibility. The 5,000mAh wireless power banks were available in multiple colors and patterns, and were priced at between $30 and $70. Affected units have an E33A model number and were sold from Amazon.com, the Casely website, and other websites between March 2022 and September 2024.

Anyone with a Casely Power Pod should stop using it immediately and contact Casely for a free replacement or a $60 store credit. Affected units should not be discarded, and customers should contact their local household hazardous waste collection center for disposal assistance. Casely is contacting all known purchasers directly.

This reminds me that I should probably go through the house and collect all my old tech that's just sitting around unused with old batteries in them...

I guess I won't be using that Nexus 9 anymore...
There are places that specialize in electronic recycling. I take various old item there and all old items with rechargeable batteries

Batteries and power banks and fickle things. You'd wanna make sure they're made right. Sketchy ones of those and cheap charging cables are best avoided. The London fire service once warned people not to buy cheap charging cables because they encountered some fires caused by them.
The London fire service are smart people.

Their website doesn't mention a recall. Irresponsible.

Edit: Sure, you see the recall on their website if you have the URL MacRumors provided, above, but if you go to the main website landing page, there's no mention of the recall in big, bold letters like there should be! Or in any kind of letters, for that matter.

these were mag-safe aka wireless, no cheap cables involved.

True, but it’s worth keeping in mind that “more expensive” doesn’t always mean “safer”.

Well-known mid-range names who sell a lot of volume are probably better than both cheap products or expensive products that might be going for low-volume good-looking products over boring-looking products.

The power bank in the picture is too small to be a standard 5000 mAh powerbank. Avoid non-standard sizes. There’s a reason they’re the size they are.

Thank you for posting this! I have one of these power banks (which I bought during a year-end sale via my company's swag store) and I use it often while traveling for work. I had no idea about the recall and will stop using it and replace it.

They are hiding it in the footer but yeah, it should be put on top similarly to other lame battery makers: https://veektomx.com/

I think all companies that sell power banks have had recalls for some of their products. Generally they aren't manufacturers themselves but maybe assembling and slapping their name on items another company manufactured. It is the internal battery cells that are the cause of the problems. Two of the larger companies that come to mind, Anker and Xiaomi have had recalls in the past. The Anker recall page is just as bad. It immediately takes you to the homepage after landing on the recalls page.

Caserly is just reselling something that another company manufactured. They seem like their main product are phone cases which is something with zero liability. Lithium batteries are dangerous in general and they probably thought that it was easy money because of the margins. But they are so wrong.

Edit, here is another company with a strangely similar name, Caseles, that sells a product that looks identical but with different printing on the product.

And this is only a 5Ah battery pack (killing people).
I’ve got a 21Ah lithium eBike battery in a fireproof/explosion proof vented steel cabinet outside - and I’m pretty terrified of it to be honest.
This is the worst… no remedy available either… 9 fires since the last “fix”…

Darn, I guess that in a life or death context, Apple gadgets and accessories are far from expensive.

I mean, can’t put a dollar on the value of life after all can we?

but how does it explode, i was sure lithium just burn
They give off gases which is why they expand. I presume they expand, the pressure builds inside, it catches fire, then explodes when the case can no longer hold the pressure.

Lithium battery fires are scary as hell. They don't just catch fire - they can shoot flames for 20 feet from the battery, and blast molten electrolyte everywhere. I presume this is what is causing the severe burns.

maybe using MagSafe for holding stuff more or less firmly and relying on type-c pigtail for far more efficient power transfer would have prevented this. safety >> convenience
