I want to go buy a new Macbook. Does anyone know if I can walk into an Apple Store and pay [anonymously] with cash???

Of course you can pay with cash. If they ask for any information (i.e. phone number, zip code), simply decline to provide any info. I guess they have cameras in the store, so I don't know if you're 100% anonymous, but they won't have a credit card trail on you.

dunno if that was what he was actually asking, anonymity and all that might be relevant, but what I think the OP was asking was whether or not an apple store is a normal store or not - the answer is indeed yes - albeit run by apple :)

Why would they not accept cash?

I bought a macpro from the apple store in London via cash without any problems, i dont see why you should have any.

Yea, I was just wanting to know if I could actually buy a Macbook without having a credit card trail tied to the MAC address of the network card(s).

I would not think that Apple would be keeping records such as the ones your thinking. If you want to buy using your CC you can go via amazon or other online stores.

I don't know for sure, but I would be surprised if they don't record the serial number of the computer with the order or credit card transaction. From the serial number they can find out the MAC address - at least the one the unit shipped with. I spoofed the Airport MAC in my iBook, but it's been so long I forget how ;)

hahah yeah you can...I bought my 12in PB, applecare, printer, and iPod mini all at once in cash. The guy was like...uhhhh OK, but of course there wasn't any problem.

IT'S MONEY!

I had a kid pay for an iPod in all singles. His grandfather gave the $300 in singles to him for Christmas as a joke, I jokingly told the kid to tell his grandfather that I didn't think it was a very funny joke.

Yep, that'll do it...carry on... Yeah, throw it out the window of a 5+ story building...or give it to me.

Oh, and I not only read 1984, but I'm actually seeing it come to pass - especially in this United States of Bush, or United States of RIAA, MPAA, etc.

Hahah good story!
...and you work at an apple store, cool!

Just out of curiousity...how old was he?

Record the Mac address? Switch off microphones? Tell me you don't actually think that Apple has some conspiracy theory for tracking Macs, do you??

I'm not saying Apple has motive to track people down, but it looks to me like the serial number of a computer and the MAC address are linked in their systems as those two numbers appear on the labels on the computer boxes. If they link the serial number to the sales transaction, which is linked to the credit card, then they (RIAA, CIA, or whoever) has a trail from the MAC address to the purchaser.

As for the microphone... http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/09/03/2148216&from=rss

When you got to register your computer it will put in your name to the serial number. If it does not you will not have your one year warranty.

Why dod I get this bad feeling I could end up in court in like 3 years. SO when the defendant asked for advice to hide his identity you amoung others helped him on this so called forum. "uhhmm ... uhmmm .. nooo"

If you went into the store and paid with over 10k worth of stuff in cash i think you would have to fill out a form, i know car dealerships have to
