macOS Catalina 10.15.8 was released last week, on February 2, 2026. It was a surprise because the last point update to Catalina was over five years ago, on September 24, 2020.

As of right now, I don't see a Combo Update. If there was a Combo Update coming, how long could it take?

The last update for Catalina 10.15.7 was in March 2024, not 2020.
That's interesting. I'm not sure what to believe now because according to "Release history" section of the Wikipedia page for "macOS Catalina", 10.15.7 was first released on September 24, 2020 (which is the date I wrote in my OP) and included a Combo Update. There was another Combo Update of 10.15.7 released on November 5, 2020. And the last 10.15.7 update was relased on July 20, 2022. I don't see anything on that Wikipedia page mentioning any relase in 2024:

Because this wiki information is inaccurate and unreliable. Detailed Catalina version information can be found on the "Apple Wiki" :apple: 😎. 10.15.0 | 10.15.1 | 10.15.2 | 10.15.3 | 10.15.4 | 10.15.5 | 10.15.6 | 10.15.7. The latest version, 10.15.8, is missing; they will update it soon.

I don't see anything on that website about a 2024 release. I only see thet September 24, 2020 release that I mentioned in the OP.

The final build of the version that is modified for security and improvements is the final numbering "2020" 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8. For example, this month's version has changed from 10.15.7 to 10.15.8

The last update for Catalina 10.15.7 was in March 2024, not 2020.
Just because the Apple support article was last edited in March 2024 does not mean that the update was released in March 2024.
The last update for Catalina (before the one that was released last week) was released on July 20, 2022. Source: https://support.apple.com/121012

The wikipedia page is completely accurate and up-to-date:

The "combo" version you're looking for was also published in March 2024 in my language.
Again:
Just because the article was last edited in March 2024 does not mean that the update was released in March 2024.

For example: The Catalina 2022-005 Update was released in July 2022 (as I mentioned)
The support article still says: Date of Publication: October 2023 - https://support.apple.com/102769

Yes. They summarize and publish. This time, they haven't published or mentioned anything related to security either.

I noticed my custom desktop wallpaper now appears on the lock screen - before it would just show the default Catalina wallpaper. That's a nice change.

I don’t believe there was a change, maybe the restart just caused your computer to begin working properly?
My understanding, and I’d love to be corrected here, is that literally the *only* difference with this new release is that it extends the certificates for iMessage and FaceTime, which were set to expire in January 2027.
Nothing else, no security improvements, no bug fixes, nothing, just the extending of that certificate, just like what they did for iOS 12, 15 and 16, and also macOS Big Sur.

This was my understanding as well. I’m also curious
