I think you are confusing protocol type (NVMe, PCIe) with storage type (SSD).

The SMG0256 SSD in my MacBook Pro is about 920MB/s write and 1360MB/s read.

Then that must be an nvme also. Because sata ssd tops out at 6gbps. 920mb is way more than that.

Between 2013-2017 Macbook Pro use proprietary, PCie AHCI "blade" SSD which is obsolete now, that's why i choose to use popular PC standard NVme PCie SSD cheaper and faster, i have an early 2015 13" MBP (PCie 2.0 x4 lanes) up to 1600mb/s.
