Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction because I’m completely stuck.
Mac:
  • iMac 14,1 (Late 2013)
  • Currently running macOS Catalina
  • OpenCore Legacy Patcher 2.4.1
After deciding to try & see if I could update my Mac a little, & with the initial help of Ai, I successfully created the Monterey installer USB using OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

When I restart holding Option, I can select EFI Boot. The Mac shows the Apple logo and progress bar, but instead of loading the Monterey installer it always boots straight back into Catalina. I never get a prohibited symbol or an error message.

On Discord I was advised to install OpenCore onto the internal drive’s EFI partition. After doing that, I selected the internal EFI Boot, but it still booted straight back into Catalina.

At the same time, my Broadcom Wi-Fi disappeared completely. The Wi-Fi hardware was no longer detected, and it even disappeared from Network Settings. Removing OpenCore from the internal EFI restored normal Catalina booting and the Wi-Fi returned immediately.

So I’m now back to:
  • Catalina boots normally.
  • Wi-Fi works normally.
  • OpenCore is no longer installed on the internal EFI.
  • The Monterey USB installer still refuses to boot and always falls back to Catalina.
Has anyone seen this before?

I’d really appreciate guidance on what I should be checking next. I’m happy to provide logs, screenshots or any information needed, but I’m not very experienced with OpenCore, so I’d be grateful if you could be patient with me & any instructions could be explained step by step.

Thanks very much.

Rather than using AI and Discord, I might suggest following Dortania's step by step instructions.

They have a sidebar that allows you to skip ahead or back as you need. But the instructions are pretty detailed.

It's how I got Sonoma on to my 2009 Mac Pro almost two years ago.

Thank you so much for that, I'll go & have a look, Ai has been ok, & I've learnt the very basics, but if it tells me something that's wrong I'm not experienced enough to know or how to rectify - hopefully I'll get there

I’ve looked at the Dortania documentation, but I’m struggling to identify which section applies to my problem. My installer USB is created successfully, but selecting EFI Boot always returns me to Catalina instead of launching the Monterey installer. Could someone point me to the specific page or troubleshooting section that covers that behaviour?
