I’m afraid to say that this will be the year I’m completely done with Apple cases. Going “green” for the sake of whatever reason they did will haunt them. I also use the Moment lenses, so I’d likely just use their case, when I want a case, anyway.

One word to describe this:
Casegate

I can see the class action lawsuit coming now. (hopefully this doesn’t happen, but you never know)

Disclaimer: I do not own one of these cases nor do I intend to buy one, I’ve used either Spigen or Incipio cases made of all kinds of different materials for many years and have been very happy with them.

Other companies make non leather cases with the highest quality. For example, I have a case from Peakdesign and it is wonderful. Used it extensively for a year yet not a single dent.

Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry. Hopefully a third party can use the leather from my burger cow.
I was reading an argument the other day that most hides are now being burned as the value per hide is to low, making it cheaper to destroy them. That is a shame and while I try to respect the viewpoints of the people on this forum who are calling meat eaters animal assassins, it is not going to change their preference for meat or will only solidify it. While red meat consumption is down and going down in America, it's mostly being replaced with other meat products - so it seems okay to assume there is not going to be a shortage of hides anytime soon. If companies like Apple are going to forgo leather - it will only add to the problem of hides being worth less, as demand continues to drop. If we are going to eat an animal, we should use ever part of it we can. From the environmental view point, cows seem to be at the top of their list due to methane. What I don't understand is how it's different than Bison, which apparently had number in the 10's of millions roaming North America before methane concerns were a thing. Being larger than cows and close to equal numbers to farm raised cattle today, are the differences that much? Not a scientist, but it seems off and more surprising as the same groups are also growing the natural population again.

We cancelled my wife's case before it shipped, I got mine yesterday. When I pulled it out, I immediately could see a wear mark at the top of the case. As the reporter noted, lint showed up shortly after opening and I can tell it's not going to last long. Third party leather case makers are going to see a lot of demand and the end result is Apple only increased its carbon footprint for making subpar cases that will be trashed.

I am unsure what to think because I think any Apple case would scratch permanently if you dug your fingernail into it, and that’s most of what the verge was mad about. Avoiding them for now.

I didn’t even try this case. I’ve been using the leather cases for years, but this looked sorta crap, so I took the opportunity to try a third party one. Went with Smartish. It arrived yesterday. Looks fine. We’ll see how it performs.

I always bought the Apple leather case. The DBrand Ghose case looks like it will be my next case.
That one weighs 33g. Do you know how much the Apple brand 15 Pro Max clear cases weighs? I can't find it online, but others seem to weigh more than this.

Has anyone bought the finewoven Apple Watch straps? I’m seeing any videos on them and I’m considering getting the brown version
Have you not read the comments and reviews of the woven cases?
It is the same material

Why would people want to buy a case with an Apple logo on it anyway? One of the main reasons for a case besides protecting the phone is hiding the logo. If Apple wants to use MY phone as an advertising space, it should pay for it.
I tend to feel that way as well, but the Apple logo on iPhone cases -- especially the leather ones -- was always quite subtle.

Nobody is forced to buy Apple‘s cases.
Good thing nobody claimed people are forced to buy Apple’s cases, then. You’re seemingly responding to a claim nobody made. All The Verge is doing is advising people not to choose to spend money on FineWoven products because they’re awful.

Am I the only one that finds it weird that people that are putting a case on a phone so they can toss it around and abuse it cares what it actually looks like? Who cares if it shows finger prints or small scratches? The question is does it protect my phone for the life of my phone(which many here is just 1-3yrs)? That's literally all that matters to me.

I can't say what someone else's case looks like has ever mattered to me unless the color catches my eye.

That's literally a personal opinion. So happily people can not give 2 damns what the Verge of anyone else thinks and buy what they like.

This is what happens when corporations chase vague moral missions instead of trying to make great products. I can finally say...with 100% confidence Steve Jobs never would have allowed this. He would not let Apples name be put on something he knew was trash just because it made him feel like he was "saving the environment". Cooks moral vision exceeds his product vision and as more corporations succumb to this way of thinking US quality will decline. Thankfully many Asian companies just want to make great products at a reasonable price.
It's Profits, Optics, & PR in that order for Cook, nothing to do with his moral vision.
If he really wanted to save the planet, he'd stop making electronic equipment!

The apple 30% margin premium has long needed to come down. Back when they were innovating constantly maybe it was worth it. Now they have become a phone company that still thinks they should be able to command a ridiculous premium on even their ******** products like cases and watch bands. With that much money in the bank its time they pass along some savings to customers. Stop gouging people on everything.

I've liked Apple's leather cases but only ever bought when they were on clearance. They fit well, felt great, and protected well, even if they weren't all that durable themselves (a couple times dropping a phone on its corner ended up with the case needing to be replaced... sometimes Apple would even offer free replacement).

I have no problem with Apple dropping leather, but to charge the same $$ for a clearly compromised product is asinine. People shell out bigger bucks for leather precisely because it is leather. If it's not leather, even if it's functionally better somehow, you look very out of touch charging the same price for it. Some car and furniture manufacturers have tried this with their seats, and I have never seen it pan out well in the court of public opinion.

Apple makes tons of good stuff, but it may be losing its "premium" image faster than it realizes. We can only be nickled-and-dimed so much.

For me, I will just look elsewhere for iPhone cases, and there are plenty of options. But I'm especially sad to see this cheap material replace Apple's excellent leather watch bands. I have four leather bands from Apple, meaning that I (happily) gave them about $600 just for those bands. I like them so much that I hate to have to search for an alternative, but I would not buy a watch band in this material.

I can see FineWoven cases being quietly dropped next year. If, like the iPhone mini, they don't sell because of this controversy and their poor quality, Apple won't continue making them.

Oh if people hate them / start returning them like crazy they will surely get rid of them... but don't doubt they will come up with another premium style option of some kind, they won't just settle on silicone and leave the rest of the market to the third parties.
