This has happened to me twice in two days, I usually just leave my iPhone connected to my Mac Pro all the time, but the last couple days I have grabbed my iPhone and it was powered off, just to turn it on to discover that the battery was dead!

I hooked it back up and allowed it to charge and all seemed well, so I left it hooked up again last night and this morning the same thing, DEAD! So I suspect that if you cheese to leave it hooked to your computer, disable your sleep mode or disconnect it when you are not syncing or charging.

Something Apple may nee to look into.

It does this with any device though. If the computer is asleep it is not providing power to USB or Firewire ports

I'm guessing that since you just got the iPhone, you are using it quite a bit during the day. When it is docked at the end of the day to charge and the computer is asleep it won't be charging but still depleting its battery. iPods don't expend power when they are off, but the iPhone doesn't really turn "off" but goes to sleep itself, which still uses power.

    That's my hunch anyway.

I can't imagine that it would completely discharge over night though.

It would depend on how depleted it was when you last used it. I'm only assuming everyone is playing with them until they are very low :) (I would if I had one). If that's not the case, then something else is going on.

Maybe there is some type of activiy the iPhone is doing when connected to the computer that does not stop when the computer goes to sleep. The exrta energy usage is enough to power it down overnight maybe?

I think this must be the case, because I left my iPhone docked to a sleeping PB the first night I had it and went from about 90% to around 25% in the 5 hours that I was in bed.

try fully charging it and then disconnecting it from your computer. just let it sit in sleep mode and see how long the battery lasts. if it only lasts 10 hours at the most then there is something wrong with your battery. if it lasts a lot longer then your computer is somehow zapping power from it while it is still connected
