I have one of ezch of these and test results from xBench and AJA System test show the 1TB being significantly slower. Speeds are below

1TB (model name: WDC WD1001FALS-41Y6A0)
Read 89 Mb/s
Write 88 Mb/s

2TB (model name: WDC WD2001FASS-00W2B0)
Read 133 Mb/s
Write 123 Mb/s

Is this normal?

EDIT: could it be that the 1TB has 32mb cache and the 2TB has 64?

Caches have nothing to do here. xBench uses uncached data for the test, so, the numbers are due, like a previous poster said, to higher density in the platters of the 2TB drive.

That depends on the current filling level of your drives. For a 50% filled drive, the speeds are indeed absolutely normal. Empty drives, however, should be considerably faster.

I recall that my empty 1TB Blacks (WD1001FALS-00J7B1) make about 120MB/s sustained.
An empty 2TB Black reaches 145MB/s.

Yup - which is why you should be buying 2TB drives even if you don't think you need them. I had a 2TB Caviar Black that was writing to blocks about 70% in and the rates dropped to 90 MB/s. The outer tracks have a huge bandwidth advantage due to the linear speed under the heads - size matters :)

I replaced two 1TB black drives that had about 1.5TB of photography spread between them. The 2TB black drive feels much quicker in daily use. Needless to say the remaining 1TB black drives are going to go away over time. The 2TB Caviar Black drive is just that much better.

They are selling the Western Digital 2TB Desktop Hard Drive - Caviar Black - WD2001FASS for $149.99, would you buy from them?

When I want to know opinions about company "foo" I first do a google search on the term "foo opinions") to see what I can find. I did this with ecost (google search string "ecost opinions" and a quick survey of what I found generally was "stay away from them". As always with these things there are good experiences and bad. But the general consensus looks to me as bad in my quick survey. YMMV
