TM isn't the best option out there! It's not fool proof! And it's still backing up on mechanical devices which can still fail. So don't rely on it completely. There are many users here, who've had a bad experience with TM.. go search the forums.
Well, there's no such thing as an absolutely fail proof solution, no matter how well it's implemented. Only the mean time between failures increases (MTBF). 😀 😛

Yup! According to Bozz an intelligent user who's opinion I respect (hey, that's rare!), TM works fine as a backup. It serves the dual purpose of being a roll-back system as well.

I didn't stick with the '08 I had for long, so I never really used it for any time at all. 10 days isn't much to base a solid opinion on, particularly when the time was spent getting into the array itself (setup and failure testing). It didn't really progress to testing out TM to anywhere near the extent it should have been, had I kept the system.

But as a general rule, things do go wrong, and the best you can do, is to try and have a plan in place. From what I can tell by other posts, TM works, but may not have all the features some are used to with other software.

I know there's other backup software out there, and it can be tested to see if it meets a specific need. It's a PITA, but it's that way for the Windows side as well. I've tested more crap software utilities, including backup, than I care to remember. 😛

I'd sooner do it manually, that way I can only blame myself if I miss something. Stressing over a bit of software for missing something is non-constructive and annoying.. 🙄

I ended up taking the 3xCavair Blacks out and just putting in a 160gb X25-M. Its unbelievable how much better it is. Photoshop loads on one bounce (if that) compared to 4 or 5 previous...same goes for aperture and Microsoft Office.

Anyway, glad I got rid of the mechanical drives

Hmm.. Space vs Speed - tough decision dude.

Here's a nice suggestion...

How about leaving your RAID0 installed and also install the SSD in one of the other bays (bay4 or optical bay two?), then goto the Startup Disk control panel and tell your mac to boot from the Intel SSD.. This way you still have the speed, and have tons of scratch disk space, should you choose to use the RAID for that... don't forget making backups!!
