Caviar, a company known for making luxury variants of popular tech gadgets, intends to release a custom Apple Vision Pro plated with 18-karat gold next year that will inevitably set you back more than Apple's $3,499 starting price.

The device's headband is made from Connolly leather, and features a gold visor cover attachment inspired by "Tom Ford flip-up glasses and Gucci ski masks."

"Judging by the public's reaction, not everyone appreciates having their eyes displayed on the external screen. With Caviar's version, you can preserve your privacy if you wish," says the company.

The Apple Vision Pro CVR Edition by Caviar will be a limited edition release of 24 units, with an estimated early 2025 launch. The starting price is "available on request," according to the website, but elsewhere the device is advertised for around $40,000.

Caviar also recently listed a custom iPhone 15 Pro that has been modified to match the look of the Vision Pro. That costs a mere $8,060 and can be pre-ordered today from the Caviar website.

$40,000 for a product that in all likelihood will be obsolete in less than a year when Vision Pro 2 comes out.
This is even more absurd than the people who paid $10,000 for the 1st gen Apple Watch.

Or, or, just hear me out on this, it sounds crazy, but I could just go and buy a normal Vision Pro direct from apple and save 36500 dollars

This is just a way to take money from people who have too much. It's also instant free viral marketing. I'm guessing it will be popular in cultures where it's important not just to be wealthy, but to actually show that you are wealthy.

You have to hand it to them. Genius.

Sometimes, it's even more important to look rich when you're not:

My first response to this article was to check if it was April 1st.

Wow, they're actually serious? 😆

LOL

I think this is true in western cultures where the person in the Lamborghini is leasing it, and the people wearing Prada and Louis Vuitton have maxed out credit cards that they can barely afford to make the minimum payment on. Related to the Zuckerberg pic - There's a great YouTube video somewhere about quiet luxury in the show Succession (i.e. the 'if you know, you know' crowd). Those flip-flops may have cost him a gazillion dollars...

IMO - These monstrosities from Caviar are aimed at other societies, who really do like to show their wealth in this way.

There are a couple of layers of irony here... There's paying 40K to cover up a low-res screen (with good tech intentions) that has a risk of cracking anyways (not sure if I should be thankful for the cover or not...) There's the idea that covering up the screen, which was intended to make the device appear approachable by showing your eyes, is even more seclusive than VR/AR already is. There's spending this much money on something your eyes will always be looking at, yet you will never actually see the gold-plating you paid for while using it because of the very nature of the device. There's also something that could be said about how wearing a golden sleep-mask is like being literally blinded by excessive wealth and how rich people waste it on frivolous purchases, like gold-plating an already-expensive headset...

You'd better do some neck work if you're going to wear that much gold on your face.

I know they'll sell every one they make. And in 5 years or so, when Apple deems this version obsolete, the moron who bought it will have a gold-plated paperweight. Like the original gold Apple Watch.
You really think people who can afford to throw away $10k on a gold plated version of an already extremely expensive gadget worries about the resale value?
