AT&T today announced that it's managed to ink a deal with CBS to bring CBS channels to the DirecTV Now streaming service. The deal includes CBS entertainment, sports, and news programming, plus Showtime, The CW, CBS Sports Network, and Pop.

"This is another key milestone in bringing DIRECTV NOW users access to their favorite entertainment, news and sports from all of the major broadcast networks," said Daniel York, senior executive vice president and chief content officer - AT&T Entertainment Group. "As we add more live national and local channels, we know even more people will choose DIRECTV NOW as their go-to streaming service."
Video-on-demand catalogs will be available from CBS, The CW, Pop, and Showtime, and DirecTV Now customers will be able to access live local coverage on close to 25 local CBS and The CW stations in the following areas:

[*]New York
[*]Los Angeles
[*]Chicago
[*]Philadelphia
[*]Dallas - Ft. Worth
[*]San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose
[*]Boston
[*]Detroit
[*]Minneapolis-St. Paul
[*]Miami-Ft. Lauderdale
[*]Denver
[*]Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, CA
[*]Pittsburgh
[*]Baltimore

CBS and The CW content will be available in all DirecTV Now packages, which start at $35 per month. Pop will be included in the "Just Right" and higher tier, while CBS Sports Network will be available with the "Go Big" plan. Showtime can be added to any plan for $8 per month. According to AT&T, the new content will be rolling out "in the coming weeks."

AT&T also plans to add 30 additional ABC, FOX, and NBC affiliates on DirecTV Now in the near future, bringing the total to more than 170 live local channels in over 80 metro areas. Some DirecTV Now customers have also begun receiving beta invites for the cloud DVR feature that is being added to the service this fall.

So, does this mean we finally get streaming football (at least in Baltimore)? Most of the Ravens games are broadcast via CBS.

I've had DIRECTV Now since January ( with the Apple TV promotion). I must admit that the I've never missed not having CBS as part of the lineup but I do welcome this news. I'm looking forward to adding Showtime for $8/month.

now if only they can make the stream work 100% of the time and fix the GUI on Apple TV

DTVN works 100% for me now. It was a rocky start their first 3 months, but I am happy I stayed with it. I like the ATV interface. Maybe because I was on VUe and this GUI was a total POS. Hated it.

Great service. Terrible apple TV app. It doesn't follow the standard playback mechanisms of skipping backward or forward. Tried going back and it just sits there buffering or something.

Right now I have both Hulu Live and DirecTV Now. Anyone know of a way to get into the DVR Beta?

This update could have me dropping Hulu Live. We restarted our DirecTV Now subscription a few days ago and my wife seems happier navigating it. To me, as long as my shows are there when I want them I really don't care... hence not wanting to leave Hulu Live at the moment.

I did the opposite and picked up a free ATV to go with the half price one I got from Sling.

The only reason I subscribe to any of this is ESPN during football/basketball season. Right now the cheapest way of doing that is Slingtv at $20. So that’s what I am doing now. I don’t even watch from the sling app, just use the credentials to sign to ESPN on the Apple TV. Although, if any of the other services gave a “skinny” bundle like sling, I would try their service if the price was comparable.

All this talk about "DVR coming soon" makes me wonder:

How much longer will scheduled broadcast television be a thing?

My question is somewhat rhetorical... as I don't think it will go away in my lifetime. I'm sure the billions of dollars in ad sales on the hundreds of hours of daily programming will keep it around for a while.

But it seems like we are clinging to an obsolete idea.

The reason you even need a DVR is because most television is still delivered to your home on a set schedule. If you're not home at 8:30pm on a Tuesday... you can't watch your show.

DVR fixes that problem. Hooray!

But today... nearly all pre-recorded TV content exists on a server somewhere. There's no technical reason why a TV show needs to be broadcast at 8:30pm on a Tuesday.

Everything could be delivered on-demand. Wouldn't that be better?

But like I said... I doubt scheduled television will go away anytime soon.

Though today's younger generation doesn't abide by a set TV schedule. Broadcast TV might be in for a tough time in the future.

Sorry for the rant... hearing "DVR" sparked this thought. :)

Yeah I got the ATV when directvnow first launched but then cancelled it because PSVue has DVR and I want that. Once DTV brings DVR then I will go back to them probably because they had a better channel lineup iirc

I've had DIRECTV Now for a few months and am very happy with it. No problems for me with the app on the free Apple TV they gave me. HBO is $5 a month. I missed CBS for weekend football and golf, but I thought $6.99 per month was too much to pay CBS for one channel. Looks like that's solved.

Whats wrong with the GUI? I like it. The only thing they need to add is a "Return to previous channel" option

These are the few that really grind my gears.
The on-demand video should use the same playback UI as all the other apps.
Toggling on/offCC with triple-tap should work like the other apps.
Accessing the on-demand video list flips the intent of the axis. Very disorienting

I prefer the grid for live TV over the hulu abomination, but if you look at the channels app as an example of a grid layout for the apple tv their UI is more natural to navigate and apple-tv-ish.

I love my GoBig (@$35) plan, but their Apple TV app is really bad. Too many incidental touches of the touchpad that causes the app to change channels. Swiping up/down to pull up menus is hit or miss as they don't always work. And the pause/resume feature is broken. If you pause, and then try to resume it'll start the show from the very start (like it was on-demand) and then crap out before it gets back to where you were.

Also waiting for DVR. If that doesn't come out this year then I'll probably cancel my plan. My schedule doesn't always align with when shows come on, and most of the shows I watch aren't on-demand. I've only stuck around because a.) it's cheap at $35 and b.) they promised that DVR would come out. But I've been paying for a minimally used service, and unless DVR comes out then I'll have to cancel, and then when it DOES come out, I WON'T sign back up due to the $70 price.
