    hey guys,

well I asked once in a thread a while back, "is it too much to ask for it all?" regarding a good camera (5mp or greater with flash) and good video (720p would be insane) and most replied with "no companies release that stuff slowly so they can optimize their money back... which makes sense...

However it seems as though now to compete with the Iphone companies have had to completely blow it out of the water with insane specs!

The new HTC has 720p video, 8mp camera with flash, front facing camera and a 4.3" touch display, HDMI OUT, 1Ghz processor, running with android 2.1.... this phone is NICE!!! runs smooth, maybe a little complicated to use it seems but the specs are unbelievable

now I just got a glimpse of a new Nokia with 12MP camera and 1080p video!

how can apple compete? honestly I would like the 4.3" screen, 8mp camera and 720p video, but I have a feeling I will be upset with the new Iphone... This may be out of their capabilities in order to compete with roaring companies going out of control with the specs.

People who buy a phone in 2010 for the camera are idiots. You want great photos, get a camera. The iPhone is like a Swiss Army knife; it does many things, but dedicated tools/devices that are better options for each individual function it does. However, for the whole package/experience/OS integration, it is still the one to beat.

I completely agree, and is the reason why I am going with iPhone when my current phone contract expires :)

I didn't buy my iPhone for the specs on the camera or video
In fact, I couldn't even tell you what they are
Even though I do occasionally take a picture and even a video
And I doubt most people carrying one could tell you without researching it

And when I buy my next iPhone, I won't compare the camera/video specs with other phones to make my decision

I want a phone that fits in my pocket. The iphone is the largest sized phone I care to carry.

I couldn't care less about the camera or the video, I actually don't have video myself. You can give me HDMI out and 720p video if you can also deliver a better OS.

I beg to differ, convience is a huge Key element. I don't want an SLR camera to take around with me, nor do I want to have to carry around my 5mp camera around with me along with my wallet, phone and whatever else I may have in my pockets.

If you can get a good camera (video as well) with your phone, why would you have both? Just as having an MP3 player in your phone was a revolution, it just makes sense to have your phone as your mp3 player as well, which is the main origional advertising campaign for iphone.

Anyways, if your argument was taken, get a phone for a phone, use your desktop for internet and email, buy a camcorder, buy a camera and buy a mp3 player.. now put that all in your pocket...

people buying an all in one device in 2010 are not idiots, they are the mainstream and what everything is moving towards.

Because some of us value the memories perserved using higher end equipment that offers more flexibility.

If you think quality photography is solely dependent on megapixels, you are not going to be swayed.

It has a camera and video
It just doesn't have to be the BEST camera and video available and compete with dedicated equipment
What next? Do you want it to change lenses too?
It is functional and does a great job

The MP3 player doesn't take the place of full blown sound system with killer speakers either

    Look, to each his own
If you want a new phone with the latest bells and whistles, knock yourself out
But it amuses me why you care what we want and feel the need to convince us to follow you

I am happy with my iPhone
I won't try to convince you to use one

Seems to me this is similar to the same spec arguments used with the MBP
In the end, I want to run OSX, not Windows
When it comes to phones, in the end, I want the iPhone experience, not something else

and what would you say to those who say you can get almost the same quality from a phone? this is what Nokia is doing with their 12 MP CARL ZEISS LENSE with 3x opticle zoom...

YES what I'm saying is we are moving to a scene where you can have it all in one item, and unless your a professional photographer you don't need to go out an buy a whole new device, as with video...

no I'm not an idiot, I realize there is more to a camera than just MP, however if you would just try to listen to my point you will see that for most users there is a reason they have a camera on a phone, cause its nice to be able to use it whenever something comes up, and it has become a really big attraction to a phone...

Yes we can all go out and buy a digital SLR for $1000 if you want to get the apateur and shutter just right, however 90% of people using a phone camera just like the convience and showing friends and families pictures right there whenever you need it.

I have an Iphone 3GS, I love it, it is my prized posession, its JB'd and customized just the way I like it, I love the IPHONE..

As well the Iphone is and has become a culture, its not just a phone its an image yadda yadda yadda... I love the apps (which are now not as big becaue the android is going to take off [BTW I hate Google!]) but they do have a good chance in taking over the Iphone..

I love everything Iphone, dont get me wrong, I'm merely stating that all these other companies are taking strides in the development of an all in one device that is functional and easy to use... I just want the New Iphone to satisfy those as well as just being a really easy to use,

tut tut. why do so many people believe higher the megapixel better the camera. among other things you are still dealing with a tiny lens made to fit inside of a phone.

Oddly enough, my iPhone does just that

Actually, the quality of my pictures has far more to do with my inability to hold the camera steady than it does with the amount of megapixels it has

Yeah, and has a whole 1GB of internal storage! Wonder how many minutes of 720p footage you're going to fit in there. The user interface is very ugly too. Not sure why everybody seems to be going crazy over this phone.

I know many people with cameraphones who simply cannot figure out how to take photos with their phones. Of the ones who do know how to take photos, even fewer know how to transfer to their computer.

There's no use having a 5mp camera in your phone if you can't use it, or if the only way you know how to export photos is via a tiny MMS.

My previous phone was a HTC, with WM5 and I loved it. I work in IT but even I couldn't figure out how to use all the functions. As time went by, I used less and less of them as it just got to be too much of a pain.

The beauty of the iPhone is that though it doesn't match in terms of hardware (and I really want a front facing camera) it more or less fully uses what it has and makes it very accessible and user-friendly.

I never said that, review response above

Yes that is true its obviously not perfect.. LOL I'm merely stating that it has some specs I would like to see on the next Iphone, other companies are trying to give it all to the user, I want the next iphone to do just as such.

and I agree with dgree03.. expandable memory is a nice option

its called EXPANDABLE MEMORY... I know since you have the iphone you not use to microsdhc cards.. but ahh the freedom of being able to have internal AND EXTERNAL storage... and if that user interface is ugly.. what do you call the iphones grid style ui?

    Android is pretty straight forward.

I don't know why people think the iPhone UI is still leaps and bounds over other phones.

Right on, man. I'm with you on this. My iPhone 3G has, I believe, a 2.5mp camera and there are certain circumstances under which it does not do well at all. For instance in dim light and/or when trying to photograph moving subjects. However, if the situation is right (such as with the right amount of light coming from the right direction) it actually can take some amazing pictures. And since it's a phone camera I don't expect anything more from it. My real camera does a little better in most situations, but even it is not perfect.

Well maybe some of y'all can spend $1000 on a camera, but I sure can't, neither would I want to.:p

To put it in very simple terms OP, it's the theory of competition. People are going to blow the iPhone out of the water spec wise because they know Apple isn't that kind of company to just upgrade everything within a year. Case and point the 3GS. It was a minor very minor upgrade from the 3G. Do you think there going to put an 8 MP camera on it. No. Do you think they'll have high-def video. No. There was a report a couple of months ago that Apple bought a huge stock of 5MP cameras which is still 2 years behind the time but whatever its Apple what do you expect. I love watching android phones stomp all over the iPhones specs because with competition, only the consumers win. And I dont base my phones off of the way they take a picture but their specs are a factor. If I put 2 phones together with the same price, of course im going to take the one with better specs. We'll see what an "A+" upgrade is but if it's just a little better battery and more memory count me out.

You mean the bondage of having to swap out micro sdcards and having to keep track of what apps and music are on which card? Yikes!

Simple, elegant, and easy on the eyes.

extremely well put, everything us said is my thoughts exactly, I guess what I'm trying to say is: I love my iphone, I love the stuff it can do, however if they dont step it up for the next iphone, I may have to move on because the competition is just getting too good... I saw the video out on the HTC, and the really nice juicy screen (which made the iphones scren look tiny and dull) and was really intrigued...

problem is I hate google, LOL especially what they are doing with Apple and their patent fight right now with the multi touch law suit etc.

well I guess we can just wait and see where apple goes with this.. they took the initial leaps and bounds in the mobile phone world setting a bar so high that only now are companies able to even flirt with the fact of being better... but I feel they will need to do something HUGE in order to remain the ring leader on this one, some of the other options are just looking so enticing

sorry, perhaps i was confused. I thought you were admiring the camera on the HTC and wanted an equivalent on the iphone.
i was just hoping to point out that even with a higher MP count, the quality of photos will hardly improve.
If you want nice photos, buy a good camera.
If you want photos, whats the problem.
