After many weeks of trying to decide whether to get the ultra I finally bit the bullet and bought one. Still getting to grips with it and still in the process of comparing it to my Garmin Fenix 6 pro.

One thing I wanted to clarify was it’s connectivity. I purchased it via EE as I already have a phone contract with them and they’ve said the watch is paired with my phone for the data plan.

The only thing that’s thrown me is that the watch can’t take/make calls when the iPhone is switched off. I thought that this would still be possible as it’s got it’s own data plan etc but other articles I’ve read have said the phone still needs to be switched on regardless but can be out of range of the watch and then it will work.

Can anyone clarify this??

Thanks

No, just tested it myself again after switching my Ultra into my Cellular service.

I can disable wifi on the watch and power off my iPhone and still make calls. It sounds like a glitch so I would give EE a call on 150 and they will call you back after the menu with somebody focussed on watches.

Incidentally EE have gotten much better at their Apple Watch suppport. They used to tell you on switch over to un-pair and re-pair etc. when all you needed to do was go out of range of the phone and Wifi if you were moving your service to a new watch. This last time they just cancelled the secondary number and set up a new one and it was running in minutes :)

Thanks. Just managed to sort this with EE. Problem seems to be that if the phone is off and the Wi-Fi is on on the watch it won’t take the call. Turn the Wi-Fi off (on the watch) and run it on the 4g network and it works fine

Just as a data point...if I turn my phone off, my Ultra on EE makes and receives calls on cellular just fine with wifi on.

Could this be linked to having Wifi calling enabled? I'm not sure where an individual setting for the watch might be these days.

The part about signed into iCloud would tie in with this, I think.
