Not interested in paying so much for a watch. Also think the case material/finishes/colors could be one of the main changes to the watch. Not expecting any huge change besides a new chip.

So Apple is doing all sorts of things to increase the cost of their up-coming products?
They are expanding all of their lines to include additional luxury tiers. They aren’t replacing the normal or low cost tiers, and no one is forcing you to buy one.

It’s a very smart and appropriate strategy for both the K-shaped economy and the chip shortage.

I was planning on an Ultra 4 this year, and will probably still stick with that for what I assume will still be the bigger screen size, but a ceramic model even at $1500 would be tempting.

Are there other benefits to ceramic? Even aesthetically, is it noticeable?

Noticeable? I mean, if Apple continues where they left off, it will be white. It is something you’ll probably notice. ☺️ Other than that, it’s basically impossible to scratch, although ceramic is more prone to breaking if it takes a heavy impact.

I still have the Series 5 Ceramic in White, and it still does everything an Apple Watch needs to do for me, even without running the latest OS. Battery was replaced last year, so it is back at 100% capacity. That’s probably why I strongly disagree with calling the Apple Watch “disposable electronics.” But I understand that everyone has slightly different expectations and ways of using their Watch. I’d definitely be happy to see an updated ceramic version.

Although it looks amazing a potential $1,250 absolutely cannot justify the price for a device that will be e waste in 4 years. You could buy an Apple Watch every year for 4 years for that price, albeit less flashy ones.

My series 6 is going strong.
Series 6 didn't have a ceramic model, if you are just talking about in general, I doubt its still going strong if you are on the original battery, and if you are i'm guessing the only way you are able to even come close to a usable watch that lasts even "most of the day" is by turning many of the features off.

this was my experience about 10 months ago with my series 5.

This is how luxury products work. Your math is correct, but it ignores the value that luxury product buyers attach to things like nice watches/jewelry/clothes etc. Call them dumb all you want, but they exist in huge numbers and spend 100s of millions of dollars.

Apple is uniquely positioned to address this market in a way that no other tech company can, so it would be financial malpractice to not give these buyers exactly what they want. They sure as hell can't get it from Samsung or Dell.

none of the costlier finishes are worth it in a device that dies entirely in a few years
I have a series 6 sapphire glass that still looks brand new and lasts the entire day

EDIT: going to say I also use it minimally. The occasional workout and just looking at notifications/the time. Not sure what else to do with it besides that

Battery in my S6 was replaced using AppleCare+ at no cost to me and easily lasts all day.

so many folks here upset that a smartwatch might be released that is open five, eg I'd expect close to $1500 ... why do you care how much people spend on this? is there the same hate for people who buy luxury cars? or any other luxury item? sheesh ...

I hope they offer the titanium finish from 2017. As it is if the ultra 4 body is thinner, I would consider the black model Ultra 4 first over a model 12 in Ceramic.

My guess: it'll be the new signature material for the Hermès model only.
That would actually be plus, since that would mean it would get the Hermès watch faces, as well as an extra watch band and nicer packaging. The question is whether the price would significantly increase over Series 5's $1299 starting price. If it remains the same, I would welcome Hermès treatment. I think it would minimally start at $1499.

Compare to the stainless, ceramic is lighter, easier to keep it looking clean, and more scratch resistant (at the cost of being more brittle).

The whole point of the Ultra is the chunky body. That's what gives the case robustness for adventuring and the insane battery life. Plus people LIKE huge watches in this class.

My wild guess/hope is that the ceramic model will have the same huge screen as the Ultra but be slimmer. More like dress watch. If it has two atmosphere water-proofing so that I can continue to use it scuba diving like my current Ultra 1, I would pay up to $1500 for it.

Seeing as the current Titanium Hermes is $1250 and the Ultra Hermes is $1500, if they offer the ceramic case in an Hermes version it will be $2500 minimum.

Again, the whole point of Apple's new expansion into luxury goods is to sell things to people that aren't price sensitive. The people buying a putative Ceramic Hermes Apple watch will LIKE the fact that it costs $2500.

Add me to the list of Series 6 owners still going strong and waiting for the right one to upgrade to. My battery health is at 88%.

As of right now, I see no need to replace my Series 8. At this point, I might just go for a dumb watch and a fitness tracker.

I bought my S8 in February 2023 and the fact it’s already gonna be EOL’d really rubbed me the wrong way.
