I feel like Ceramic Shield isn't being talked about enough, like FRFR.

Is it just me or does it feel like typing on pottery or what... I LOVE IT!!!

The oils don't seem to build up nearly as much and wipe off much easier, almost like on the first pass.

Apple went ALL OUT on iPhone 12!!! I've never been more proud to be team Apple!!!

Likely because it scratches pretty easily and most have a protector. I resent that Apple makes devices that are damaged so easily.

My experience with screen protectors is maddening.

And in my findings they leave micro-scratches themselves. YMMV.

A screen can’t be equally scratch resistant and crack resistant at the same time. Apple chose the latter. I don’t mind as I don’t normally drop my phone and I use a screen protector.

It’s likely just that the oleophobic coating hasn’t worn off your device yet. It wears off over time.

The rep that delivered my phone warned me the screen is prone to scratching. Historically my wife has never used a screen protector and I have never not used a screen protector. Before she dropped her iPhone 8+ face down on gravel last month, I had only seen a scratch on one of her phones. And she doesn't baby them. I am truly puzzled how her screens stay so pristine. I was going to try the iPhone 12 mini I received yesterday evening without a screen protector, but chickened out and it will arrive tomorrow.

Because of AT&T's effort to retain people by offering high trade in values, I'm trading in her seven month old 8+ for $100 more than we bought it for and she's getting an iPhone 12 tomorrow. I don't know if she'll put a screen protector on it, but if she doesn't and it still looks good after six months I'll consider not using one.

She didn't know that with AppleCare+ you can get two screen replacements per 12 month period at $29 each, so she wasn't planning on letting them scratch and then replace the screen.

Oh I didn’t know you could get screen replacements for that cheap either. Does it have to be at an Apple Store?

Damaged so easily? You're aware that phones other than Apple use Corning glass too, right? I've had every iPhone since the 3GS and have never had a cracked screen or scratching more than micro scratches.

I've never used a screen protector, never needed to have a screen replaced through damage and can't say I've noticed any scratches either.
Had this 8 for 3 years and the screen is absolutely fine. I don't go out of my way to baby my phones either.
Not trying to suggest people shouldn't use one btw it's totally personal choice, it's just something I've never considered using.

Ceramic shield is great for folks with slippery hands. I'm pretty clumsy myself so I see how that could save me.
The most impressive feat is that Apple didn't sacrifice scratch-resistance to improve shatter-resistance (usually those two are negatively correlated).

So far I’ve been fortunate and haven’t ever cracked my screens. I am prone to dropping so I always use a decent case and screen protector. Now I have cracked my screen protector a few times but the screen was fine. The ceramic shield sounds interesting but again I am taking no chances and installed a screen protector on my 12 anyway.

Is that really the different glass you are feeling? I'd think the "feel" is from the coating.

It doesn't say, but it's almost impossible to get Genius appointments around me so my guess is no. I could have told you next Friday when I had an appointment at BestBuy scheduled, but we instead decided to upgrade her to an iPhone 12.
