Does an app have to be optimized for split view function, or do all apps have the ability to support split view? I'm finding that I can't split view certain apps and I was wondering if this was normal in iOS 11.

thanks.

No they dont all support it. Obviously games don't. But many major apps like facebook and spotify don't support it. After 2 years I've given up hope. If developers haven't done it now they never will.

Google's apps recently added support for this. Finally.

Just tried it. Google Maps or GMail at least cannot be set to split view with some other app. Chrome, Keep and Translate work.

On the apps where it doesn't work you can get another app as a floating one but not in split view. It's ridiculous when their two most used apps don't support split view when they are also the ones that would be the most useful that way.

AFAIK iPad Air doesn’t support splitview on iOS 11 because it just have 1G ram! Wonder why it is supported on ios 10 though?

I’m now used with slide over since it gives quick multitasking

Makes no sense for Spotify not to be supported. Works well on Android.

Split View was never supported on the original iPad Air. Slide View is - on iOS 10 & 11.

One app that I find annoying that doesn’t support it is Marvel Unlimited. They update that app all the time “fixing bugs” but there is never a major update and there are always bugs.

But MU split screen on my 12.9 would be perfect.

Samsung devices can split screen any app its Apple ui that can’t ,tell me why you can’t run two apps at the same time , when you can others it’s a matter of how iOS runs . Instead of forcing apps to be coded this way iOS should be programmed to simply run two apps at the same time , if Samsung can do it then Apple should be able being Apple apps are more refined , Apple is just late to the game on split screen I mean the fact that iPhone 11 does not even offer this says enough.

I said it 3 years ago, I will say it again. Apple really needs to make this feature opt out for good reason (e.g. it's a game) instead of opt in so developers cannot just ignore the existence of split view.

It took years for GMail to support it. I don't think Google Maps supports it even now, again for no good reason. It's bollocks that Apple markets the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement yet one of the basic features is supported so sporadically.

I have found, with Apple, if one can stick in the confines of the Apple ecosystem, it is a much more pleasant experience.

They pretend to exist for the third party app developers but the documentation is spotty, some APIs are not public, or they disallow features in competing apps.

While not practical for all, if you can pull off stock apps, the experience is great.

Google apps are the most annoying for me - no Google Chat for slide over 🤯 re authenticate (Face ID if enabled) Google Drive every time you switch into it on slide over
