Fling Game Controller for iPad

Is the game shown on the screen a port of Neon Tango? If so, WANT.

I'm patiently waiting for a car stereo with airplay. I only need audio but audio/video airplay would be nice for people with monitors in their vehicles.

Man, I really want this, too. I would love a car stereo that had a power and volume knob, and nothing else - no buttons, lights, etc. - and simply "streamed" via Airplay my iPhone. I'd enjoy the minimalist-ness of that.

How the hell does AirPlay work? I mean I understand that they connect via WiFi, but how the hell do the speakers type in the WiFi password and get passed the security without a screen and a keyboard??

Based on the responses in this thread, there seems to be some confusion on how this works, myself included. The blurb about this new iHome does say you have to be on a wifi network, which makes me wonder as well about those dumb wifi/sharing passwords for such a speaker. Aside from that, I guess I was naively hopeful that this Airplay technology would eliminate the need to be on a wifi network; I'd hoped all you'd need was your iPhone/iPad and the speaker and nothing else. Oh, well.

They use their own invisible network. Not the wifi you have at your home. They wil work even if you don't have a wifi connection at home.

I want to believe that, but doesn't the blurb say it requires wifi

Personally I would strongly recommend saving your pennies and going for Sonos S5 all-in-one units at $399 each. I currently have two units controlled via the free iPad and iPhone controllers, happily streaming iTunes, internet Radio, Pandora content around my house - either both units playing the same material or separate etc. - and it's a revelation. Sound is great, flexibility is unbeatable, setup took all of 10 minutes. Sonos is one of the few companies out there with the same design/functionality ethos as Apple. It just works and works well.

Because I'm such an admitted Apple fanboy, I've wanted to stay in the Apple ecosystem, and hoped Airplay would do that, but the more I learn about Airplay the more I think I'll go with Sonos one day.

I would love to have airplay speakers, but I already spent a bunch of money on nice speakers and would just like to have an airplay dongle that's cheaper than an airport express.

A Bluetooth enabled car stereo does what you are describing.

I bought some iHome speakers recently and was pleasantly suprised at the sound quality that came from them, and the portability with the built in battery made it a must own. Bought one for my mom for Christmas, and it was so cool I ended up buying one for myself.

The Airplay speakers look cool, but I'd still like something I can dock. Since speakers w/ just music is more for longer uses that could drain the battery, rather than say airplay to put a YouTube video on the TV for somebody to watch real quick.

well there is a USB port on the back of that speaker. So if you had the iPhone dock, you could connect to the speaker and there you go. Looks like a really well made speaker, hopefully its not too high priced though. Click the link and you can scroll down to see the pic with the iPhone dock connected to the speaker

Eye-Fi...

I am wondering the same thing. I am curious what kind of limitations it would have. The iPhone/iPad can't act as a Wi-Fi hotspot, so I have no clue how you would get the Eye-Fi card to connect up. It seems like it would be limited to APs that you programmed into the card and/or public APs.

I don't know how it would work out in the middle of nowhere unless the Eye-Fi card could somehow act as a hotspot, but I doubt that's possible given the battery constraints, etc.

It would be much better to just use bluetooth for this kind of thing. Oh well.

They actually have their service set up where the card sends the photos to an EyeFi service. You then go to a web site (in advance) and tell it where to send any photos upon receipt - - Picasa web, Flickr, Facebook, a PC, etc etc. On the PC you actually have an app that runs in the background and polls for photos. I assume you'd have a similar app on the iPod/iPhone. Because all the connections are outgoing to EyeFi's servers, there's no firewall issues.

I tried out one of their products and the biggest issue for me was the programming of the chip for WiFi access points; in order to connect to an access point you had to put the chip into a PC and program the access point's settings. The best setup for me was actually activating the access point in my phone; that way the chip would have a constant access point to connect to no matter where I was.

I've been interested in the iHome Airplay for a couple months now. I'm hoping the thing isn't too crazy expensive.

The way I understand it, Airplay needs a wifi network, so if car companies built a wifi access point into the stereo to enable airplay, the iphone will attempt to use it to access the internet, but obviously won't have a connection, thus you won't be able to use any internet streaming, etc through your stereo since the iphone thinks it's on a traditional network.

Get an A2DP enabled head unit. It's identical to airplay for audio.

So... when is Apple's next special event :p I got a gift card to burn.

That's what I'm waiting on. We keep hearing how an announcement will be made by Valentine's Day, yet I'm seeing no reports about Apple reserving any exhibition space.

As soon as they do, watch out world, here comes Apple in 2011!

Yet at the same time it seems to me a bit like attaching a horse to pull a car. Isn't the whole point of iOS to get away from analog devices? Any analog input can be simulated graphically.

The sensation of using the analog input can't be simulated, though.

It is all too easy to move one's thumb to the left or right to turn faster and slide their thumb right off the control surface, resulting in turning not at all - especially if the controller is mimicking an analog progressive control stick.

I'm really hoping someone will bring out outdoor speakers with AirPlay before the Spring. I redid my patio late last Summer and held off hard wiring outdoor speakers because I thought AirPlay would be a better option when it's available... I don't care if I need to run power to them--I just want a couple of weather-proof AirPlay speakers that look like fake rocks :)

I don't even own an iPad but I want those suction cups!

I wonder if an iPhone/iTouch version is possible. I would buy them.

Why would you want that on a screen the size of an iPhone. That would just take up valuable real estate.

So has Compact Flash gone totally obsolete? It seems like most cameras, even DSLR are using SD nowadays.

Save for pro cameras, which are still sometimes CF+SD, yes. I needed to get a CF card for my Canon 20D last summer on short notice and it was all I could do to find one in town.

The airplay wifi products at like an airport express. You log the item onto the network ad then it is available to stream music to when you are on that network.

How is the old AirTunes technology any different from AirPlay? Are AirTunes compatible speakers still compatible with AirPlay? It just bugs me how after 5 years the technology that speakers complies with is now obsolete. Speakers are supposed to be able to last more than a decade.

It doesn't work like that, as has been previously posted. However, why don't you just change your security to restrict which specific devices can connect to your WiFi, and leave it open? This kind of security works a lot better than a password IMHO.

Not in my world... higher-end digital cameras still use CF (cameras released in the past 1-2 years). Though, we'll see what the next generation does...

Note that it's quite easy to change the MAC address of many systems, so specifying a list of allowed MAC addresses won't stop anyone clever.

You can still dock your iPhone or iPod touch with the iHome AirPlay speaker.

I read today that release is March/April and price is around $450.

AirPlay is just AirTunes renamed and with added video support and other methods of using the feature. Anything AirTunes compatible is still AirPlay compatible (like the old Airport Express, which I'm still using and can now play music through from my iPod in addition to my Mac).
