Soap and water doesn't mass-kill microbes, but a good hand washing rinses them from your skin and down the drain. The antimicrobial crap kills a certain percentage of microbes but leaves the more resistant ones alive — and they get to reproduce freely now that you've removed the competing less resistant strains.
