Is this the same Parrot that announced a nice little adaptor and ampliphier that allowed connection between an airport express and a pair of unpowered stereo speakers? I don't recall that ever shipping.

I do have to admit I like the idea of obd2 connectivity, would be great if they could leverage this to allow an approaching iphone to unlock the owner's car via bluetooth.

Anything that talks to the car via OBD2 is restricted to what OBD2 can do, namely clear engine codes and read engine / emissions data.

OBD2 isn't some magic control bus for every system on a car. There are cars out there that have a common data bus for many systems, but it's neither standardized, nor OBD2.

This seems really great!!! Boo-hoo-hoo to all the negative comments... One of the best looking dash displays, compatible with carplay, that i've seen so far. Hopefully other companies, including the car manufacturers make note and model their in-house systems off of this.

I will never buy a Parrot head unit POS again. 30 seconds to boot every time I turned the car on, constant crashes, the company is in England and they only have a few developers which means slow bug fixes.

That's going to be expensive...

I'd consider it for my current car but I'm going to be getting a Tesla very soon so I don't really need it.

Jailbreake fail

I have chosen to restore my iPhone 5S with jailbreak without using iTunes, and it stands just with the Apple logo promotion with a small bar underneath, but nothing happens.

I can't set it in DFU mode, and use iTunes. I don't know what to do :(

Based on the soft buttons along the right side, it looks like it's an embedded Android-based device that supports Apple CarPlay? Or are they just ripping off the Android L icons?

All of these things are nice, but ultimately, the ideal evolution of of an in-car dashboard would be on the windshield itself. We need navigation directions, FB statuses and tweets that show up on the windshield. That way your eyes are still directed on the road ahead of you.

I'm skeptical. Parrots first attempt of a car stereo the Asteroid system was just rubbish. It took ages to boot, had terrible radio reception and the outdated system crashed more than it worked.
I still think it's a good idea because it stirs up the market a bit. Hopefully other manufactures will follow. I would especially like to see higher resolution displays. It is just stupendous that you can get Hi-Res Displays on under 100 buck Tablets but not in car in Dash Systems costing multiples of that.

This looks incredibly cumbersome in comparison to keeping my iPhone in between my legs and only checking it at a red light, or when I'm merging onto a freeway.

Yeah... except one detail : it isn't legal.

im currently leaning towards the Alpine CarPlay-only head unit, but this looks awesome. fully featured... and maybe, just maybe, it's internal software won't suck?

As long as Waze isn't supported, I won't be buying into CarPlay.

i mention this every time somebody says that, but if you did your homework youd know there are head units that support both CarPlay and Waze. see the Pioneer AppRadio -- use carplay when you want it, and use the unit's native mode (which supports Waze) when you need it.

would never touch a parrot device, ever. Always bad experiences with their self-made products.

Now when Alpine was using Parrot for their BT before it was fully integrated, it was okay and worked 99% of the time. But the Parrot stand-alone stuff is horrible.

Then again, Alpine has been making ****** in-dash Navs for quite some years. The last good one I purchased was in 2008 or 09. Hopefully Alpine puts some processing power into their '15/'16 units and better UI.

Just how much better off are you attaching an iPad to your dash?
Why would anyone want this? The UI is nauseating.

What cars will they support?

any car that has a double-DIN mount.

not much better at all. worse, id say -- an ipad has no external GPS antenna, no backup-camera input, no AM/FM radio, no steering wheel control support, and no auto-optimized UI. no thanks.
