The Henge Tethered Docking Station has 2x miniDisplayPort outputs, which is unique (afaik). Does that mean that this dock could be used to run one of the MST 5k monitors, such as the Dell UP2715k, from the one MBPr(2016)/TB3 port (using two DP cables)? Good news if it can, thou an expensive solution. Also wondering how much bandwidth might be left for anything else running off the same dock.

Woo boy, the horizontal dock is $499.
Wow... Is it made from gold-plated latinum?

Personally I prop up my laptop on a 10 year old but still sturdy Kensington stand. I've got three USB-C cables: monitor, power and cheap hub. You can spend a lot of money but it's definitely not a necessity.

I have the original Twelve South BookArc vertical stand. It's served me well and I was thinking that I had to replace it, but then I found out that Twelve South is coming out with an insert that will allow me to continue using my old BookArc stand with my nMBP. Nice!

I do have to say that the Henge docks are awfully sexy, but for my purposes they're more fashion accessory than a must have productivity acccessory. I'd also have to expect that the Henge Docks will only have a lifespan of the current nMBP model. If the ports change a bit, the horizontal dock becomes a very expensive version of their tethered dock.

Nice :) Especially when they could've tried to upsell you to a completely new one. It's actions like this that make them a brand to recommend.

Astute observation, and I didn't think about that. It's true, the more generic things have a longer life cycle. I've re-used my USB 3.0 hub just by replacing the cable to the laptop. You can't do that with the hubs that have captive cables.

- If it works like it's supposed to, yes. Thunderbolt 3 can contain two DP 1.2 streams, which would be split to the two mDPs.

5K resolution takes 26.5 Gbps at 8 Bit and 32 Gbps at 10 Bit (according to this calculator). The Dell is 10 Bit, so 8 Gbps would be left over for other stuff, which is enough for at least USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet - plus a few other things.

(Other, simpler TB3->2xDP adaptors exist, too, from the likes of Plugable and Startech, if you just need those two ports.)

It's kind of ironic how their home page shows their docks alongside the Apple Thunderbolt Display.

Which wasn't that great, admittedly, but left a bit of a void in terms of displays with design to go with a Macbook.

... Seems more likely they've not tested with a Mac but it would probably otherwise work.

I think it was the other way around. They sold to a bunch of TB3 adaptors to Mac users, who complained that they did not work. So they now specify "just Windows" (and limit sales).

The Henge Tethered Docking Station has a lot more going on than just [TB3 -> 2x mDP]. And it's marketed to MBP/2016 users, so presumably there are no macOS driver issues.

Given that, it's not clear why those unassuming adaptors from Plugable and Startech can't work with Macs too. Especially since this problem can be patched by a temp hack.

Exactly, sounds like this company was able to clean up the (port) mess that Apple made with these new MacBooks. Or in other words, these docks are the perfect business solution for the problem Apple (intentionally?) created. I think we all see what they did there..

So you'll be passing on buying a new MacBook Pro for at least another 3 years? That takes courage ;)

I have one of the new MBPs and the port situation is annoying to put it mildly, but that said, they're hardly the only ones doing this and USB-C is indeed expected to be a big big deal. I know some people who trade in components and they told me they're moving a lot of USB-C components.

Actually, I think Apple sees the Tethering and Horizongal Docking Station (using product names here) are an intermediary solution. Their vision is to plunk down your MBP, hook up one cable to the 4K/5K LG monitor and be done with it.
