And void your warranty at the same time!

I can confirm that there is nothing about this product that will void your warranty in any way.

Whether or not the removal of the bottom plate will be necessary for installation of the OWC DEC, I am curious to see how the installation will affect the thermal management system, positively or negatively.

We can confirm that the OWC DEC has been designed not to interfere with the thermal management system.

For some reason, Apple is obssessed with making these devices tinfoil-thin. For users who buy the MB Air and non-pro models, granted. But PRO users are concerned about PRO features such as PRO ports, NOT whether their laptops are so thin and light they feel like they'll break in your backpack! Someone please slap some sense into Jonny!!

Ok, but Apple hasn't released any new models of MacBook Pro. Why would you whine about what Apple is doing in an article about a peripheral? Apple's decision is made. Check back again with them in 9 - 12 months.

Odd how you consider a 'Pro' port to be USB-A 3.0 or an SD card reader.

Yet Apple give you Thunderbolt 3/USB-C capable of 40Gb/s throughput each, capable of transforming into any interface you need, or run your entire workstation & charge the laptop at the same time from just one port, and all people can think of is how they need a dongle to charge their phone.

Yeah, I don't understand it. In some ways the MBP is the most pro laptop you can buy just because it's so versatile in terms of i/o. The fact that it can take advantage of a "dock" like this from the throughput standpoint should be a huge plus in the mind of any forward-thinking geek.

This is exactly what i've been waiting for - I think this has been the most obvious solution to the port problem

What "port problem" ??

Other World Computing today announced the OWC DEC, an attachment designed to snap onto the bottom of a 2016 MacBook Pro to add additional functionality to the machine.

The OWC DEC adds 4TB of storage, an SD Card Slot, USB Type-A ports for using standard USB devices, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. According to OWC, additional features will be introduced at a later date.

OWC has crafted the DEC from aircraft-grade aluminum that's designed to match with the finish of the MacBook Pro. It attaches flush to the bottom of the MacBook Pro, making it thicker, but doing away with the need for a separate dock. OWC says the DEC when attached to the 2016 MacBook Pro will be "as thin as a 2012 MacBook Pro," which measured in at 0.95 inches. The pictures of the OWC DEC appear to be early renderings and do not depict all of the listed ports.

OWC plans to begin shipping the DEC out to customers in the spring of 2017. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Aren't they being convenient with their facts? As thin as a 2012 MBP, which came out prior to 2012. The 2012 rMBP was thinner than the one above.

Ridiculous and yet the only way to make the new MBP palatable.

Of course, the value proposition for laptop plus dock pretty much sucks, and you have to wonder how much the damn thing weighs.

I wonder if it's compatible with the "new air"?

The problem that many have with port compatibility. I love Thunderbolt 3, and personal setups can be changed or adapted, but that doesn't work for everybody. Some people have to adapt to older standards and they shouldn't have to carry around adapters for their portable computer.

LMAOO that is the most idiotic product release! It looks awful! Who would ruin the perfect MBP design with this horribly thick dock?!... Wonder how many they're gonna sell. I'd much rather carry around 10 cables/adapters if need may be!

HOW does it 'attach'?

My only guess is by hooking directly to the logic board after removing the bottom plate. Interesting idea if so...but I feel like they should have fleshed out the renderings to actually show more ports, adding that much bulk for some extra storage and an SD card slot doesn't seem like a great trade off to me.

This seems really cool, but shockingly I'd rather forgo the extra storage and just have a massive battery under there... I don't need either more storage or more battery life, but something about being able to keep my laptop on for days at a time sounds so satisfying...

Yeah, my definition for a pro machine is one that I can use to get work done in a business environment. Not all of us, pros or not, get to work in isolation in an environment we have 100% control over.

I meet with someone at the office and they hand me a USB stick filled with files. I need a dongle? Then someone gives me an SD card filled with pictures or video from a camera. I need another dongle? Then I hook up to the conference room projector, so I need another dongle? Let's be charitable and say the room is equipped for HDMI input and not just VGA. Oops, still need a dongle. And now I need to reconfigure some office networking equipment, so I just need to plug into the LAN... oops, another dongle.

Now I know some of you NEVER so these things anymore because you have found modern ways to get around them, maybe your office has DisplayPort monitors or you exclusively use cloud sharing for your files. If plugging in a USB drive was a once in a blue moon scenario, I could get the "courage" thing. But all those things I just mentioned are things I do almost every day. And not just for consumer things like reading an SD card full of photos from a camera where you can rationalize the lack of the SD card slot by saying "just use the camera's USB cable" or "just upload them to the cloud". If I need to image an SD card with a bootable Linux partition for my Raspberry Pi, I want to be able to do so.

It is simply embarrassing that a "pro" machine is lacking in so much capability and flexibility.

A little bit of me just died inside seeing that product.

Apple is working hard to move everyone to a USB C future and cynical products like this just hold everyone back.

These are just renderings, the product doesn't exist yet. For something so big you'd hope for an extra battery. 4tb external drives are the size of a Moleskine notebook, this thing is like 6 of those. I don't see the advantage of having this thing connected vs a separate dock or a peripheral that you can plug in when needed. If your work requires this extra stuff and your laptop is sitting on your desk most of the time, might as well get a desktop.
