CES 2019: Philips Hue Gains New Outdoor Lighting Range and Outdoor Motion Sensor

Signify today announced that its Philips Hue lighting lineup is gaining new outdoor lighting and sensor options in 2019.

New to the Hue Outdoor line is the Philips Hue Outdoor Sensor, which, like the indoor sensor, is designed to detect motion. The Outdoor Sensor is able to tell when a person is nearby, turning on outdoor Hue lights automatically.

The Hue Outdoor Sensor is wireless and operates on battery power, so it can be placed anywhere that's convenient. It has a 12-meter detection range and an integrated dusk-to-dawn sensor, making sure the lights only come on when it's dark outside.

Priced at $49.95, the Hue Outdoor Sensor will be available in February 2019.

Along with the sensor, Signify is introducing several new Philips Hue wall-mounted outdoor lighting fixtures, including the Philips Hue Welcome Flood Light ($109.99), the Philips Hue Discover Flood Light ($139.99), and the Philips Hue Econic family, priced at $129.99.

Hue Discover and Welcome Lights​

The Welcome light is limited to one shade of bright white light, but the Discover light is a white and color ambiance light, which means it can be set to various shades of white or one of 16 million colors.

The new Philips Hue Outdoor lights will work like all other Hue lights, allowing for Siri-based voice controls via HomeKit as well as app control options through the Hue app or the Home app.

Hue Econic lights​

The lights will also work with scenes and automations, allowing them to be integrated with other HomeKit products and set to come on automatically at designated times if desired. Signify plans to release the lights in February 2019.

Nice, was hoping they would come out with an outdoor sensor. They really need to either update the current hub or come out with a new one. With all the new lights and accessories they have come out with or are coming out with that 50 device limit is gonna get pushed pretty soon...

I'm already over it, I've had to set up a second hub and move stuff over to it. It works 'ok' but it's not great. It would be a lot better if they even just let you tie two hubs to the same account.

As far as outdoor motion sensors, I've been using a normal one outside for a few months and it's been fine, (it's quite sheltered) A good use for it is the temperature sensor, I have it as a favourite in the Home app so I can quicklyy see the temperature before walking the dog!!

Agreed. I'm getting there, and that is even without the Hue garden lighting I've been looking at.

there is no a limit of 50. philips simply says that it guarantees flawless functioning up to 50 devices but u can have more than this. i have 52 in my home and all works normally.

I pushed my Hue system to about 54 lights. Everything works fine with the Hue app, but HomeKit doesn’t like so many lights — they continually show as updating in the Home app.

That's not quite true, you can have a few more than 50, depending on what you are adding. If you have a lot of accessories they will eventually hit a limit and you can't add any more. I found this out the hard way!

Yeah, it's the accessories I think, as they do more, e.g. 4 buttons on the switch. I've got 47 lights and 16 accessories, I hit the limit when I had 14 accessories, it wouldn't let me add any more accessories, I had to move a couple of rooms onto a second hub.

I wonder how all these battery-driven accessories—sensors and, with other brands, security cams like the Circle 2—will perform in the -15 to -30C temps of a Canadian prairie winter. Anyone in Saskatchewan or, say, Minnesota have experience hanging this sort of stuff off their house?

I guess I cant speak for temperatures quite that cold, but I do have an indoor motion sensor that I am using outside (completely covered from rain/snow) that has been working flawlessly for the past 2 years. Gotten into the single digits (Fahrenheit) a number of times and it continued to work.

Yeah, a second hub probably isn't the greatest. I imagine with HomeKit it wouldn't be much of an issue. Just problematic in the Hue app itself. I also am using an indoor motion sensor outside but covered. Been going strong for 2 years now. Would like to have one more in the open in the backyard for the dogs when they go out in the dark.

HomeKit does help get over the problem, unfortunately my set up includes a lot of Ikea Tradfri bulbs connected through the Hue bridge, HomeKit doesn't see these. I've got a Raspberry Pi to have a play with HomeBridge, but it'd be nice if I didn't have to faff about that way!!

Why? I use and have been using the Indoor sensor outside with absolutely no issues. It's placed just under the eave and works a treat!

I also use an indoor one outside, but it is covered and not exposed to the rain and snow. I imagine this one would be better suited to deal with wet conditions so I could have it placed more in the backyard for the dogs when they go out at night.
