SanDisk today announced a new high-capacity SSD prototype that offers a total of 8TB of storage space, which is the biggest SSD that's been made so far.

At 8TB of storage space, the pocket-sized drive offers double the capacity of the 4TB super slim prototype drive that was shown off last year. SanDisk isn't selling the new 8TB SSD as of yet, but it does offer transfer speeds up to 20Gb/s.

Along with the prototype drive, SanDisk also debuted its new 1TB SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB-C, a dual connector drive that can transfer content between USB-C and USB-A devices.

The Dual Drive Luxe USB-C is tiny enough that it fits on a keychain, and it is set to launch later in the first quarter of 2020 for $250.

This is great and all of SanDisk to offer an 8TB SSD, but is SanDisk or anyone else even selling a 4TB external SSD of any kind yet?

I have the SanDisk Extreme 1TB USB 3.1 SSD. It's a great little drive in a semi-rugged enclosure that's on par in price and performance with the Samsung T5 and better looking.

Here’s one 4TB:
None from mainstream brands.
That's not a portable SSD.

No doubt the 8TB will be $1K+ minimum or something even sillier. But hey, what's new.

VectoTech Rapid 4TB External SSD USB-C Portable Solid State Drive (USB 3.1 Gen 2)

He was referring to the OWC 8TB. It comes with its own suitcase... a dead giveaway that it might not be all that portable. 😂

Which is surprising. Any ideas why none of the big players have released a 4TB portable SSD?

That VectoTech Rapid 4TB is big enough that it could simply be a USB 3.1 enclosure around a conventional 2.5" SSD. Surely the likes of Samsung and Western Digital wouldn't mind slapping a mid-tier enclosure around one of their SSDs and marking up the price.

Great, we need 4 TB, 8 TB and 16 TB external portable SSD, to boot Mac and work from them all day long at our University.

I would image these kind of things don’t sell as well as they may have 10 years ago (when we were talking about single 4-8TB spinning hard drives). Now your average consumer streams everything and puts their stuff in cloud drives.

And all over their desktop of course.... lol
