Accessory maker Scosche today announced the launch of a new range of vehicle mounts that are designed to work with Apple's MagSafe Wireless Charger. These mounts are not standalone and have been created as mounting enclosures to allow the MagSafe Charger to be used in the car.

Scosche's range of mounts are able to securely hold and power the MagSafe Charger from Apple, as each one is equipped with a Scosche PowerVolt 20W USB-C Power Delivery Car adapter that Scosche says has enough power to enable the MagSafe Charger to charge an iPhone 12 model at 15W (12W for iPhone 12 mini).

There are several MagicMount MSC mount options that are available, including a Window/Dash mount, a Cup Holder mount, and a 4-in-1 kit that includes Swing-Arm Dash and Vent mounts and Lock-Nut Vent and Dash mounts. According to Scosche, the Window/Dash model is also ideal for in-home use.

The new MagSafe-compatible MagicMount options are launching in the spring.

If you have to supply your own cable and charging coil - this is essentially a glorified plastic enclosure. They will get commoditized on Amazon and Aliexpress in a heart beat. Instead they should have integrated the cable and coil to Apple's spec like Belkin did...

Yeah products like these are lazy. I cringe whenever I see an Apple Watch stand without an integrated charger.

Except Belkin didn't do that. Theirs doesn't charge. They only incorporated magnets to hold. Has Apple actually licensed the MagSafe Charging to a third party?

Yet another piece of utter rubbish that will end up pretty useless in real life scenarios, unless you're going to use it in a broken car that is parked permanently at your backyard.

This does charge at the full 15W and does not require you to bring your own cable. So I suspect that they do have a license from Apple.

Sorry, my bad....I was thinking of their car mount, which doesn't charge. So yes, apparently Apple is licensing the technology. I wonder why a licensed 3rd party car mount isn't available yet?

I bought a 3rd party one from eBay....similar to this one on Amazon.

It kinda works, but after a while the phone starts to lose charge. At least it was cheaper than the Belkin car mount.

One little bump on the road... and uh oh.
I don’t know about this new model, but I use their model that comes with a metal plate that you attach to your phone case and I rarely ever have it fall off. I drive a lot, some years over 100k miles, and the only time my phone falls is if I tug the charger too hard, or the suction cup got too hot, which is maybe 3 to 5 times in a year.

It really is the best mount I have ever used. Just make sure to properly clean the mounting location before you set it up. If this new model is anything like their old one, it would be worth the buy, but I guess it depends on how strong the magnets in the phone really are.

As someone that wouldn't (for many reasons) use wireless charging tech that isn't made by Apple, I like this a lot

Scoche mounts were never strong enough to hold my Plus iPhones in my Wrangler JK.

Is Apple's MagSafe charger CarPlay compatible? Thinking this will be a cool thing when you get in your vehicle to just stick your iPhone to this and CarPlay would work....or is that asking too much?

Yawn, these third parties should stop making MagSafe charger holders (something you have to buy separately anyway) and consider well-designed, multi-functional charging and non-charging mounts with MagSafe built in. Someday...

I have used this $11 variation of this for the past week with my big iPhone 12 Pro Max with an apple case:

I use it in a 10 year old SUV that is pretty rough riding (with "sport" suspension settings turned on) and it has not fallen off. Is it impossible, no of course. But I've been really pleasantly surprised. And with a PD 12V plug, I'm getting nice charging speeds. I just retrofitted my car with a wireless CarPlay solution, so this completed the set up very nicely.

That would only work if you had wireless CarPlay.....in which case it wouldn't matter if you had MagSafe or not.

I believe I remember seeing something posted by a Scosche employee on a thread a month or two ago that said Apple had not provided the MagSafe charging specs at that time, only the magnet/mounting specs. So they were only able to design MagSafe accessories that mounted to the phone. My guess is that is why all of these mounts being announced right now either use the Apple MagSafe charger like these from Scosche, or rely on a Qi charger with magnets that work with MagSafe as we have seen other products annouced at CES.

Hopefully Apple has released the actual charging requirements by now and we should start seeing true MagSafe solutions that mount and charge this spring or summer (it takes time to design/prototype/begin production after they get the specs).

Magsafe only does charging. Apple could have made Magsafe special if it also had the means for data transfer along with charging. Perhaps that will be for some future no-port iPhone with MagSafe2.

I agree with you. I don't know how someone compares something for the car to something for the home. Those are two totally different chargers. o_O
