At CES in Las Vegas this week, temperature-controlled mug maker Ember said that it plans to release a new Travel Mug 2+ with support for Apple's Find My app in the second quarter of 2023, according to TechCrunch and Engadget.

This new functionality will enable users to track the location of the Travel Mug 2+ in the Find My app in the same way as an iPhone, iPad, AirPods, or another device. The new mug will also have a built-in speaker that can emit a chime to help users find it when it is misplaced. The mug will otherwise have identical features and pricing as the existing Travel Mug 2, which is available for $199.95 in the United States.

Ember's temperature-controlled mugs are designed to keep your coffee or other hot beverage at your desired drinking temperature for up to three hours, or all day if the mug is kept on the included charging coaster. The mug can be connected to an iPhone via Bluetooth and controlled with the Ember app, and the Travel Mug 2 also has built-in touch controls for setting a preferred temperature between 120°F and 145°F.

The new Travel Mug 2+ will eventually replace the existing Travel Mug 2.

From what I've read, people who don't have Ember mugs think they are too expensive and over engineered. But most of the people who do have Ember mugs love them and sing their praises to anyone who will listen.

Sort of like a certain computer company.
I know a few people who have them, either given them as gifts or bought as a kind of novelty purchase, and their takes are all some variant on "meh, it's nice to have but I wouldn't miss it." I think the scenarios you find yourself in where you want to keep a drink warm for a long time but a cheaper insulated travel cup wouldn't do the job itself are pretty rare. "I want a cup of coffee now, but I also want the same cup of coffee in an hour" is not a thought I have a lot. It feels like a solution in search of a problem. Not everything needs a 'smart' variant; mugs are quite high up the list of things that don't.

Ridiculous example of over-engineering.
Totally agree! I thought I was going to have an unpopular opinion but glad you think it's over engineered. Also, I think this kind of product is a waste of resources and creates a need (desire) when there isn't really one. So it's over engineered both in the technological sense but also engineers psychologically. Total waste of resources.

At first glace I thought this was stupid. BUT, then I remembered how many times Ive put down my coffee mug in the morning and forgot where it was. Or how many times ive stuck it in the microwave to reheat and then forgot where it was.

Still id never pay $200 to solve those two problems.

Let me introduce the old fashioned and analog "Thermoskanne". Keeps your tea warm for up to 8 hours* without recharging. To recharge, you just fill it up with another hot beverage!

Free lifehack: to make it last REALLY long, clean out the thermos with boiled water first, this way the hot beverage does not cool down from hitting the "cold" surface of the thermos when you pour it in.

I love coffee, but sometimes it gets cold, but I'm one of those people who thinks that cold coffee is like room temp beer: if it's good quality, it's going to taste good no matter what.

That said, I worry a little bit every Christmas that someone is going to waste their money and get me one of these mugs that I really don't want OR need.

I have the smaller cappuccino version of the mug and use it every single day. Can't do without it at this point.
find my functionality for the travel mug makes total sense to me.

200 BUCKS do you know how much freshly brewed coffee I could buy for that if I was even drinking coffee in the first place?!
You can make the same argument literally for anything. $3000 macbook? how many PCs is that? :)

if we want to talk about coffee, there are espresso machines you can buy for your home that costs $10k+. I don't think you understand the at-home 3rd wave coffee market. even for drip coffee machines, you can get a 15$ black&decker or a $500 technivorm

I have an ember mug - AMA!!

I think find my is overkill.

I do enjoy my mug albeit wish it had longer batter life.

It’s not my preferred drinking vessel. I enjoy a good ceramic Heath mug.

Save your money for a good grinder and beans. Start with pour overs.

If you’re drinking Starbucks you are the problem.
