that part I agree. I think people on this forum are well aware of that :) just because something is out of your price range, that doesn't necessarily make it "dumb".
It's not that it's out of a price range. It's the fact that it's easily 1000% more than an insulated container that can do the exact same thing (i.e. keep your beverage hot) and last your entire life. It's about being environmentally friendly as you don't have to toss it after 1 to 2 years when the battery no longer holds a charge on the Ember.

It'd be nice if Ember sold replacement batteries since it's not that difficult to get the old one out, but they'd rather sell you another $200 travel mug.

Absolutely right! It’s not a price thing. I just don’t feel comfortable buying one and then replacing again and again and again to keep my drink warm over time. It’s just not environmentally friendly to me. I get the convenience of it, sure and I’m sure many enjoy it!

Actually, it is an excellent example of over-engineering.

Haha! Agreed my friend. Agreed!

$200 mug. Just get a $20 Stanley. Lasts a lifetime. No complicated electronic componentry. Oh, and if you lose it, although you don't have Find My feature.... guess what, you can BUY ANOTHER! You can buy 10 and still not hit the cost of this one mug!

I had the "normal" ember mug 2 - and had to return it. The inside coating (varnish?) comes off - and ends up in your drink. I had 1 warranty replacement - and each lasted about 2-4 months. I don't know how healthy the coating is to consume.

Apart from that the batteries wear down very quick in my experience.

I don't know if the travel mugs are any better.

Save your money for a good grinder and beans. Start with pour overs.

If you’re drinking Starbucks you are the problem.
I'm not really sure who this was aimed at, but I live in a city with loads of amazing small cafes owned and staffed by baristas who know and care about coffee. There's not a straight dichotomy between owning your own grinder and drinking Starbucks coffee, although tbf maybe that is the case in the US where I hear the coffee situation is still pretty poor.

There are plenty of amazing non-Starbucks cafes in Los Angeles where I am located.

I was also thinking that this new mug is enhancing Apple's Find My technology, supplementing it as "Find My bank account and drain it". The built-in speaker will sound an alarm once all $$ has been drained.

Edit: Or maybe the alarm will actually go "cha-ching!" Who wants to try it first?

Yeah, three hours doesn’t seem like much. I have a cheap mug that I use and I go into my office, my coffee it’s still sometimes too hot after a few hours, and I have to be careful not to burn myself.
These also cool the beverage to a drinkable temperature (quicker than just opening the lid) and holds it there. For those that have spent money on expensive grinders, brewers, papers, scales and prepare their water beforehand (as they do in some of the more coffee serious countries), I can see how having the result of all that expenditure last for as long as it sits on the charging plate could be worth it for them.

At first glace I thought this was stupid. BUT, then I remembered how many times Ive put down my coffee mug in the morning and forgot where it was. Or how many times ive stuck it in the microwave to reheat and then forgot where it was.
And, it never tastes the same after microwaving, really.

At CES in Las Vegas this week, temperature-controlled mug maker Ember said that it plans to release a new Travel Mug 2+ with support for Apple's Find My app in the second quarter of 2023, according to TechCrunch and Engadget.

Ember-Travel-Mug-2.jpeg

This new functionality will enable users to track the location of the Travel Mug 2+ in the Find My app in the same way as an iPhone, iPad, AirPods, or another device. The new mug will also have a built-in speaker that can emit a chime to help users find it when it is misplaced. The mug will otherwise have identical features and pricing as the existing Travel Mug 2, which is available for $199.95 in the United States.

Ember's temperature-controlled mugs are designed to keep your coffee or other hot beverage at your desired drinking temperature for up to three hours, or all day if the mug is kept on the included charging coaster. The mug can be connected to an iPhone via Bluetooth and controlled with the Ember app, and the Travel Mug 2 also has built-in touch controls for setting a preferred temperature between 120°F and 145°F.

The new Travel Mug 2+ will eventually replace the existing Travel Mug 2.

If you read the Amazon reviews of this company’s products you will find many reports of the ceramic coatings of its cups flaking off .

Just a thought, but maybe it would be advised to fix a potential heath hazard before adding near useless technology.

I have quite a few, in different colors, various types and sizes, of Klean Kanteen insulated mugs, water bottles, insulated water bottles, plus more of their products.
They never brake, and they are more affordable than these. So I am all good for my great Espresso's 😊

I suppose this mug looks great in their owners' Tesla cars. But $200 to keep your coffee warm seems high to me. Doesn't coffee flavor degrade the longer you let it sit, especially while being warmed at the same time? Seems if it takes you hours to drink your coffee, you're doing yourself a disservice.

For the rest of us, there are more common-sense alternatives that costs far less. I guess if I had an extra 50 bucks and this this was $50, I might get it just to explore the novelty of having such "tech" in a coffee mug.

How? It's a $199.95 mug. It would suck to lose it. If I already owned this mug, I wouldn't upgrade just for Find My support, but it's a nice bonus for future buyers.

EDIT: Unless you mean the entire concept of the temperature-controlled mug. :)

$20 Stanley. Lasts a lifetime. No over-complicated electronics that will break in a few years. And if you lose it without Find My support just buy it again still well under budget. :)
