KEYi Tech, the company behind the Loona companion robot and ClicBot modular robot, is showing off a new take on AI assistants at CES 2026 called DeskMate, which is exclusively for iPhone.

Rather than building another standalone robot, the company has gone with a desktop charging hub that turns an attached iPhone into an AI companion, using your device's existing display, camera, and microphone to bring it to life. Apart from three USB-C ports and one USB-A port, the device features a rotating and tilting MagSafe charging stand that tracks your presence and keeps the iPhone facing you at all times during conversations. It even displays cute Pixar-style animated eyes on the screen.

The companion app automatically activates when you attach an iPhone to the charging pad. From here, the DeskMate is able to handle voice commands, manage your calendar, set reminders, and answer questions throughout the day. According to the company, DeskMate can also initiate conversations, offer suggestions, or provide updates when you return to your desk.

The AI companion integrates with workplace tools including Slack, email, and calendar apps, and it can also join video meetings to take notes or provide summaries. The idea is that it learns your routines and preferences over time, adapting its responses and suggestions accordingly.

KEYi Tech says it plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign in March for the device, which will be priced below $300, although the final costs are apparently still being finalized.

I just don't get how any of this is better than what we have now. I get that AI has it's use cases, but $300 (and probably some kind of subscription down the road) for a stand and eyes just feels like I could be holding the device. Then I could do most of this quicker by myself. I don't want or need an AI friend.

Now that I am thinking more about this a bit more, it is called DeskMate... am I supposed to put his on my desk while I do work on my laptop or something? in that case im already on my computer, where I can do everything this can already. I seriously don't need something on my desk for that at all.

Unless you have some kind of physical limitation that limits your ability to physically interact with your phone, I don’t see much use for this. I don’t doubt anyone getting this will have that “this is so cool!” feeling, but I think that feeling will be short-lived.

When the back-end service gets switched off, you'll be left with a convenient paperweight.

I'm doing my absolute best to avoid any "smart" / "internet-connected" hardware like this. I got stung enough with Stadia, although props to Google for actually providing a way to unlock the controller.

George Orwell, in the book 1984, thought we would one day have screens that would "watch us", but he never could have predicted that we would pay for them and willingly install them.

Made that mistake once years ago with Sense sleep tracker I got through Kickstarter or whatever. They switched off the backend because they went bankrupt and that was it. Never again.

Interesting idea, but I wonder what the security and privacy protections are. I am not sure I want to add a device with a Mic to my office. I handle private and confidential conversations there. Same thing applies at home (I have turned off my voice activated devices). If this is all handled locally then I might be convinced. If it relies on a network service that is not secure or private, or might be withdrawn as mentioned above, I'll pass.

I wonder how this might impact the homepod with a screensetup apple thing that might or might not happen.

This could be the HomeKit accessory we read about recently and this would make sense rather than a standalone screen product … I would love that …

I have enough personality with myself — I don’t need GPT or other f***ing AIs talking to me like I’m stupid.

I understand your frustration. If my iPhone ever starts saying that kind of s**t, I’m going back to a Nokia 3210.
"I can see you're upset. would you like me to recommend some ways to de-stress and recenter yourself? I can also help you walk through the various triggers you may have throughout the day and come up with a schedule to better help you stay on track. Just say the word!"

I don't need it to do anything AI-ish. I think a dock that would put little eyes on my phone and look around like it had personality would be enough for me.

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Looks nice. Will be fun to try it out. Might get one if it is going to $249. But first waiting for some reviews on the product.
