I compltely agree, the added power will be great but that keyboard made the old MBA look and feel like such a premium over the other competitors.

If apple somehow releases the GM version of Lion before the weekend, then I will believe that MBA will come out on July 6th. Apple usually waits for 2-3 beta versions and then release GM version. And then, they wait 2-3 weeks to release the lion to the public. My guess is MBA will be released Mid-late July.

Spoke to apple online store today about ordering a mac air 13" asked what happens if i order now (del expected in 2 weeks in Thailand) and the new model comes out while im waiting. I was told that it is not likely until at least after the end of July. And i would expect that they would say that as they don't want to lose sales, i made mention of all the strong rumors and she scoffed at that...

Yeah, the Apple Online people aren't allowed to say anything, even if they know something, so this information isn't good at all. My sister in law works for the Online Store support and hates it when people try to talk about rumors. Just leave this this dead horse on the ground...

With that said, mid-July is the most logical point. I'm hoping that after the weekend of the 4th, we'll have a mad rush to GM Lion and maybe we can get lucky with an Air release of July 12th.

Probably everyone to the left of the far right hates Rush Limbaugh, but he seems to think that OS X Lion will be released on the 6th or 5th. If that's the case, there's a good chance the new Airs will be released at the same time.

I'm banking on the 6th, since July 5 is right after the holidays and there could be shipping issues.

Doesn't the OS need to go through the Gold Master stage before it is publicly released for resale?

Gold Master is meant for print distribution. If Lion was being sold as physical media, then it would be Gold Master. Apple can sell it at any time and release delta updates as needed. Final Cut didn't go gold master prior to released. It just popped up on the App Store.

I feel like we'll be seeing things work differently from the past releases of OS X.

I kinda feel like lion is a bit farther off than next week though. If the Airs are released concurrently then I hope not, but if Airs ship next week then I couldn't care less about Lion's arrival.

While GM was classically used to describe the entity used to manufacture physical media, GM is now used to describe a project milestone in addition to the final build for a given release. A well defined software project will have GA (general availability) criteria like no severity 1 bugs or 48 hours of stress testing without failure. That criteria is applied against 1 or more RC (release candidates) and - when the criteria is met and management signs off on the quality certification - the final RC is said to become the "GM for GA". If Apple develops software like most companies - and I suspect they do - functional coding likely wrapped up weeks or months ago on Lion with the more recent periods being focused on squashing bugs and system-level testing.

I very seriously doubt Apple would post a software release - especially an operating system - without carefully vetting the quality of the same. So whether by name or not, Lion has or will go thru the "golden master" phase of software development.

Ever bought a really crappy app from the App Store? You know... one that crashes alot or is very buggy? Those were likely written by developers who were writing functional code one day and released the next. Or they just have incompetent testers.

+1. Apple doesn't ever certify software "GM for GA" though, but I think this is their version of "GM for GA", especially that C2D MBAs are starting to run out. I predict this week or next now that Lion is practically finished. Hoping for this week, expecting next week.
