Don't recall seeing any rumors indicating we will see improved Face ID this year and I'm not expecting it, but if it DID show up, I'd be much, much more likely to upgrade from my 8.

Any indicators it's coming this year? I'm sure Gen 1 is fine, but we all said that about Gen 1 Touch ID and now nobody wants to deal with Gen 1 Touch ID because Gen 2 is that much better, so reasonably expecting the same performance delta for the next generation of Face ID.

This is the big question, Will there be improvements to second GEN face ID and if there are, does Apple make that exclusive to _all_ the 2018 iPhones? If there are improvements to face ID, I would expect them to debut or at least discuss what they have altered in order to make it more responsive, upgraded hardware, etc. If there is improvements to Face ID GEN 2, I would only expect it to be applicable to the 5.8/6.5 iPhone X, where as the 6.1 LCD iPhone only may have the first GEN Face ID Hardware to incorporate the lower price point it will be starting at.

If it’s just software changes, it would be a colossal cheek for Apple to limit it to the 2018 models. X early adopters would be pissed enough if the rumoured price drop for the 5.8” refresh comes to fruition (though personally, i’m not convinced it will).

I’m actually thinking the 2017 iPhone X will be discontinued from their lineup, with the introduction of the 2018 iPhone 5.8 Being in place, with a possible lower starting price point.

I’m sure the X will be discontinued in favour of the refresh. But in two minds about pricing. I suppose it comes down to whether Apple think the market will tolerate a £1200 price tag for the Plus. If I have to go one way, I suppose I’d conclude it won’t, hence maybe I do think the price drop is likely after all. We’ll know soon enough.

Maybe this year’s phones will the 9 and the XI?

I think they’ll begin to move away from iPhone 9, 10, 11, 12 etc going forward.

If technology allows, I am sure Apple will incorporate changes to FaceID. It works really well for me and I doubt Apple will tout huge leap for FaceID as that would be admitting version 1 did not work well.

This is one reason I think they would withhold gen 2 one more year even if it were theoretically ready. Same reason they won't make the notch smaller this year - even if they now can, they won't because it will come off looking like an admission that they never wanted the notch to be as big as it was, whether that is or isn't the case.

I think gen 2 Face ID and a smaller notch go hand in hand, and won't be seen til 2019.

Still think they might make some unannounced tweaks. I agree with you that announcing big improvements would indicate that Gen 1 was not perfect.

I think if a "gen 2" is ready to go this year, we'll see it this year. If it's not ready for another 3 years, we'll see it in 3 years. I don't think they would make major improvements on the current design then just sit on it and allow the competition to catch up. Assuming a two-year window between gen 1 & gen 2 just because TouchID had a two-year window seems silly to me. I think they'll release it when it's done.

That said, I personally don't think we'll see a "gen 2" this go-around. But I hope I'm wrong.

I think there's merit to this as well. Given how sloth-like Apple can be with updating stuff, it's probably a no-brainer that the chances of them having gen 2 ready are basically zero. I mean they can't even release AirPower without a 12 (!) month delay from the time they already had hands on prototypes and the design work long done, forget Face ID gen 2 within 12 months.

Of course no one knows but if I was to guess I'd be in the 100% sure camp that second gen will be out this year. The reason being, based on the rumours so far, I think Apple would have to be pretty confident that it's addressed some, if not most, of the early issues with Face ID (some of which users have been quite vocal about) for them to go ALL-IN with Face ID on the entire line-up and fully drop Touch ID. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Biggest gripe with Face ID for me is that I have to have the phone almost perfectly parallel to my face; table and a sharp angle are no goes. Also doesn't work horizontal. It's also really difficult to unlock in a car dock; I typically drive and my wife hates the fact she has to enter my password and can't just teach it her face.

None of these things are earth shattering, but they're all things I took For granted with Touch ID. In many ways it is more convenient, such as remembering passwords and protecting apps (as opposed to shifting how I hold the phone to get my finger in the Touch ID).

So you can never see your notifications?
its not like Touch ID. you dont have to swipe up to open the phone. faster Face ID will just be able to unlock faster but you still have to swipe up.
resting your finger on the touchid instantly opened the phone which was annoying to me.

Only if you had that setting activated though...

I understand what you’re saying, however; I don’t know that I would compare a delayed AirPower to second GEN Face ID. Those are really two different things not exclusive together and we don’t fully understand why the Airpower hasn’t released yet, even though Phil Schiller did state “Look for it in 2018” during the 2017 Keynote. As for Face ID Gen 2, even if Apple doesn’t discuss what improvements they have made, there very well could be some tweaks with the hardware or it may be faster to unlock, or it’s more accurate, ect. We won’t know until the user has time to actually test Face ID with the 2018 iPhone X, which I’m hoping Apple will elaborate any improvements during the Keynote.
